My dealer first Quoted me at $57.00 for the fuel filter. This is about what I had expected, as I had read others were being charged this on this site and others. When it came in, they only charged me $37.00.They seam to be able to charge what they can get.Although I have been buying alot of parts from them lately. And they are probably charging me the Jobber price.
Is there a inline Pre filter someplace under the Vehicle in the stock Gasser. location? I have yet to look under mine and don't have a manual..When I ordered my filter the parts man asked which one I wanted?
May have to go look.
Ron
No inline pre filter, MB has a nice pre filter that would work well. They can be found HERE and also Autozone carries them or use to and the will fit the hose on CRD so I am told.

Changed a diesel fuel filter for the first time in my life this week. Thanks for the wrench idea retmil46. Can replacing a dirty (not clogged/no water) diesel fuel filter account for the improved throttle response off from idle?

Definately possible, usually notice the effect at peak load. On most diesels, will first notice power loss pulling on hills under load if filter is partially blocked.

If RFCRD is right, and this is a wick type filter, that soaks up water in the element itself until it's saturated, you won't see any water until you're WAY past the point it should have been changed out. Just because you didn't see any water drain out doesn't mean there wasn't any in the filter. Perhaps that's why the owners manual says if you get the "water in fuel" warning light to get it serviced ASAP, it means the filter can't soak up any more water.

If it has a water drain on bottom, I seem to remember that it does, then it does not have the wick type filter element.

Changed mine at 19K, some rusty water droplets, lots of black debris particles came out of the drain. Old filter element was dirty brown in color, fuel was clean looking. I'm going to switch to 15K intervals in the future.

Black debris is most likely dead microbe's in fuel killed by biocide in retailers tank or yours. The only problem is they clog filters fast, I would get a small MB prefilter that is clear and install before the OEM filter. It's a small filter and will fit easy at the filter head.

Thanks for the link.

Now, is there anything exotic about changing the fuel filter?

Have large pan under the truck or be outside somewhere where diesel fuel spilled will not be a problem. I use some special plastic hose clamp pliers I bought at local parts store and crimp off the lines before I remove them. Then you can just put the minivac to the bleed nipple or just use the hand primmer to fill the filter.

I changed my first fuel filter on the CRD a few days ago. It took all of 30 minutes working at a relaxed pace. I used an oil filter band wrench with a right angle swivel to remove/install. I used my $4 Walmart funnel with drain lock as well. In order, I removed the 3 plugs to the fuel filter. One on the bottom, easier to unplug from underneath, 2 on top. Removed the fuel line in front from the filter head, put the funnel under the filter, drained the filter into the quart cup on the funnel, then took the old filter out. Found the center rubber washer missing from the filter, it was stuck up inside the filter head. Took the new filter and put 6 ozs of Power Service into the outer holes(normal flow) then installed it, using the water-in-fuel sensor on the bottom from the original filter. Used 18" of 1/4" tubing to connect to the bleed valve on one end and a drain can on the other, pumped the air out with the primer pump, tightened the bleeder valve when air stopped coming out and clean diesel started. 5 or 6 prime pumps is all it took. Started right up, no missing or coughing of any kind.

Without a filter band wrench, I could see where it could be frustrating.
