Dealer by me wants $47 for the fuel filter, gonna have to spend the cash though. Ive got 17K miles now and its sorta feeling like its not getting fuel like it should. Its starting to feel sluggish from a rest. I checked through the OM for when to change the fuel filter, I may have missed it, but didnt see the info.

20,000 miles if you have fairly clean fuel to buy. Local dealer quoted me high $30's a month or so ago if I remember correctly. I can check with friend at local 5 Star (mgr of parts dept) who was thinking about starting the internet parts for the dealership and see what he can send you one for if you like.

the filters are made by UFI, a British company. you can email their sales/technical staff here.

There is nothing exotic about the fuel filter. Crosses over to WIX 33647 or Fleetguard FS19579.

Was told at work that we use the same filter on some of our smaller transit buses. Last time I talked to the local Detroit Diesel rep, told me to call in the number and they probably stock them. I need an oil filter, going to start by asking at a WIX dealer.

Definitely does not cross over to the Fleetguard FS19579 as that's what I use on my 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 Cummins Turbo Diesel.
The FS19579 is a "cartridge" type fuel filter; the fuel filter on our CRD's is a spin-on type similar to what's used on the GM Duramax 6.6L's.

That's odd. I believe I got it straight from the Fleetguard website, crossed over directly from the Mopar number on my filter. It's been a month or so since I ran the numbers, maybe got something crossed up. I also read somwhere that this filter is common to many Cummins applications and available at a Cummins dealer. The WIX number came straight from the WIX website, anyone try it yet?

Yes. It crosses to the 2.8CRD, but says its unavailable until a new part number is issued.

And that means they don't have the proper filter as yet, or what it crosses to at least.

Down here it was $36 at Lake Norman CJD. Surprises me that another dealership actually outcharged those bandits. :?

Came up with my own solution to the high priced and PITA-to-change factory filter. Ordered a Permacool Fuel Filter/Water Separator kit from JC Whitney, $50. 2 micron, better than the 3 micron factory, supposedly good for 24K miles. Replacement filters are $18.

I installed it ahead of the factory filter, and in a location so that it's a heck of a lot easier to get to for draining and replacement than the factory beast.

Might seem backwards having the 2 micron ahead of the 3 micron filter, but I'd rather have the $18 filter clog up instead of the one that costs $36.

Yes Mitch it would have made more since to have use a 5 or 10 micron el cheapo filter that would have keep the big stuff out of the OEM filter, but as you say the filter is only $18 and easy to replace so I guess it's no big deal other then having to be replaced more often.

What I have been meaning to ask is where the info that the OEM filter is a 3 micron came from. It's just seems unusual to see a 2 or 3 micron filter without a prefilter to prevent early failure of the 2 or 3 micron filter.

My 05 CRD FSM has the 3 micron specification in it.

What is FSM? Factory Sevice Manual? That's cool if it is a 3 micron filter for sure.

Factory Service Manual. Pretty well designed. Heated, thermostatically controlled, rated for -40F, 3 micron and a built-in primer pump and bleed valve.

I guess I am going to have to step up and order a FSM, just hate to spend a bunch of money for something I'm about to get too old to use. :(

Wix list this filter as a Liberty CRD specific filter.

Amsoil list this filter in there model specific application but it is absent from their Wix filter listing to buy.

I will contact Amsoil and see if I get a response.

It actually looks almost identical, right down to the water seperator attachment on the bottem, to the one on my 92 Cummins Turbo Diesel. I haven't compared the two side by side, just a quick first look. The 92 has a spin on type as well.

A friend from NAPA called Wix, and was told that they are not yet producing this filter. Instead, they taunt us.

I think I am going to do as RM did. I did that a long time ago with an old olds cutlass diesel I had.

My dealer first Quoted me at $57.00 for the fuel filter. This is about what I had expected, as I had read others were being charged this on this site and others. When it came in, they only charged me $37.00.They seam to be able to charge what they can get.Although I have been buying alot of parts from them lately. And they are probably charging me the Jobber price.
Is there a inline Pre filter someplace under the Vehicle in the stock Gasser. location? I have yet to look under mine and don't have a manual..When I ordered my filter the parts man asked which one I wanted?
May have to go look.
Ron
