-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, I have a problem with diesel getting into the engine oil on my 2004 2.8crd Cherokee(liberty). I changed oil 6k miles ago and some weeks later noticed smoke coming from exhaust when idling for a while at traffic lights. Normal driving seemed OK. Checked the oil level occasionally, looked full, but last week looked very full. Drained oil and got approx. 10 litres out!! Refilled with 5l. of usual simi 10.40W and after 50 miles level was up again by 0.5l. Still smoking at stops after oil change. Driving well but idle a little uneven. Any ideas as nothing on the web for this Tks Sean Cherokee (Liberty) 2.8CRD 2004 with 170k miles. |

Howdy whelas Welcome to LOST you'll get better diesel answers if you post over in 'CRD...Love that torque.' my best guess would be that you have an injector sticking open - so that when you shut down it's dumping fuel line pressure into the cylinder and that leaks past the rings into the oil. seems like a likely way to hydrolock a cylinder. some one over in the CRD section may have a better answer |

Hi, Sean, and welcome. The obvious question here: Are you sure it's fuel in your oil and not water? There are lot more places coolant and oil can mix. If you know your coolant is not contaminated and the level is staying consistent, then obviously diesel is the only fluid left. Have you had an oil sample tested by a lab near you? There are several in the states that will test a small sample from a little sealed plastic bottle they provide, giving you an exact composition of what's all floating around your engine. I would guess you have something similar in your neck of the woods. There aren't many places oil comes into contact with anything fuel related in the 2.8, so I'm with ATXKJ with the injector idea (or something similar). A bottle of diesel fuel system cleaner might be a good thing to try. Also, a decent diesel mechanic in your area could probably test the injectors/cylinders just to see if you have any ring damage and your compression is still there. Dan |

Are you showing any fault codes? The more information you can provide to this group the better the chance of a correct diagnosis. What leads you to believe that it is fuel that is in the oil? Check coolant levels as mentioned. Welcome to the group. |

Hi guys, Thanks for your replies, I parked this over the Xmas so back to it again. Using the key I got 4 fault codes 1130 Fuel rail low pressure, 0190 Fuel rail press sensor, 1685 wrong key, 0620 generator. The explanations are the best I could get on the web. Water level has not changed in 12 months since I replaced thermostat and no contamination on filler cap so not water. Next I brought the Jeep to local garage and from his scan said fuel rail pressure was only 5% down. He checked the injectors on the bench and all working perfectly. Done a wet and dry compression test and cyl 1 and 4 perfect but cyl 2 and 3 30% below cyl 1 and 4. From his experience he would expect cyl 1 and 4 to give problems not 2 and 3. His theory is that incomplete combustion was letting diesel past the rings on cyl 2 and 3. In 50 (local running) miles since oil change oil level has gone from low mark to above high mark on dipstick almost 1l extra! Any ideas if this adds up why these 2 cylinders. I am using K&N air filter for approx. 70k. Am I looking at replacing the rings or a complete rebore? Thanks Sean |
