I was changing out my bad thermostat and was getting ready to put on the new one when I discovered my brand new gasket is ripped! I should have checked it prior to starting but it was unopened new. Of course no gaskets to be had locally. Anyone cut one from a sheet of gasket material and if so what was the material type? Thanks for any input!

Well yes and no. I have made many of them from gasket material, or in a pinch a pop or beer case. But with that said never for my CRD, but if I had to I would with no doubt. I have made them for any chevy gas engine you can think of and a gm 6.5 non turbo diesel. With no problems just use permatex to help seal it off.

I have some gasket material and made one for my f350 thermostat housing. It worked but I only used while I was flushing coolant so I could save the real gasket for when I installed thermostat.

Go to NAPA, they should have gasket material by the sheet. Trace the old one and cut it out and then use some Form-A-Gasket No. 2 Sealant (Permatex) on both sides of the gasket. All should be ok....

Keith may be able to overnight you a new OEM one. This is a gasket that would be very difficult to fab successfully because it is so narrow. The consequences of creating a leak will likely be catastrophic, given our collective experience. Also, it will be a LOT of work to fix if your fabbed gasket leaks and you have to replace it.

If I was stuck without a gasket, I would use only Rolls Royce Hylomar sealant. (You can get it in the US from road racing shops and Grainger.)

Thanks all. It sounded like making one wasn't the best solution. I found one at a dealership a little over an hour away. Long drive for a $2 part, but I needed to get this thing buttoned up.
