Identifying those holes is something that I'm a bit fuzzy on too, or I'd happily offer instructions.

I wasn't aware that they were visible with everything installed... But it makes PERFECT sense that they would be under the intake elbow. Seems Mopar just loves putting things underneath hard-to-install components. :banghead:

You probably have the no hole gasket.

There's three types,

a. No hole.
b. One hole.
c, Two hole.

So, has any one had a factory engine with untouched sleeves that actually did have a hole or 2 in it?

How big are the holes and are they on the firewall side of the tab?

The holes are approximately 1/8" in diameter and i believe that the tab is to the rear of the engine and closer to the firewall. Possibly someone can confirm the location of the tab on the engine.

I am going from memory but I think that it is near the EGR valve.

Possibly the parts department at the Jeep dealer can determine what size head gasket was used by identifying with your Vehicle Identification number?

Go to viewtopic.php?f=98&t=76773 for a picture of a 1 hole head gasket off the engine showing the position of the hole and a narrative of how you "might" be able to see it with the intake elbow still on. You definitely cannot see it by just taking off the plastic engine cover.

No, I was looking at the darkness of the gasket mating surface, that is where the carbon blew past the gasket.

Hi guys!!

Similar problem here, not sure is the same.
The short story: During the winter I noticed on cold and humid days a bit of white smoke when cold, since it only did it when very humid I though it might have to do with the weather...
A couple of weeks ago we did a short road trip and I checked all the fluids as usual, topping the coolant just a bit. We came back and a few days later the low coolant light went on, wired because I had just topped it. Filled it again.
Two days later I started the car, went inside to get my things while warming up the engine (as usual) and when I came back out I see coolant coming off the muffler weep hole; in a few minutes there was a good size puddle on the ground.
Turned off the car and called a mechanic.
Car still runs "relatively" good, I mean no loss of power or funny things.
Have not driven the car since. The mechanic came to see the car and thought it might be either the cooling system of the turbo leaking into the exhaust or the cooling of the EGR. He seem a very knowledgeable guy from south America (Uruguay) that claimed having worked on hundreds of these CRD as they are common down there (I know they are, I'm from Argentina). Problem is: he said he will send his tow truck to pick it up the next day and has not returned my calls since; it's been a week. I've been borrowing my wife's car but can't go on like this.

Questions: Do you think I also have a blown HG or what this guy told me makes sense to you all?

It appears I will have to tackle this one myself, unless any of you have a trusty mechanic to recommend here in the Atlanta area.

Thank you!!

Brown Auto Service (sometimes called dodge doctor) in Chamblee is pretty good for regular maintenance. I don't know if they have CRD familiarity as the only people to work on my engine are Geordi and me, but it's worth a call. They might know a good small diesel shop in the north metro.
