Post subject:  CRDs and fuel tank recall

I can positively state that CRDs are included in the "recall" that gets you a Mopar hitch (if you installed a Mopar hitch after purchase you can get reimbursed) as I just received 3 interim notices today. One each for myself and stoutdog and one for my 05 CRD Sport that was junked after the dump truck encounter. That said the notice says parts are not yet available and a further notice will be sent out when parts are available.

Don't ask me when parts will be available. All the interim notice says is DCJ is making all "reasonable" efforts to get parts. Exactly what "reasonable" is since it's been over 6 months since DCJ agreed to this step.

The notice is silent on whether installation of a Mopar hitch would come with Mopar wiring for trailer lights but I would suspect not.

PS the 2 of our CRDs that are still on the road both have the Mopar factory hitch and wiring but my wrecked one did not. Based on that I'm assuming that notices are going out to all KJs for the applicable years regardless of fuel type or whether or not they came with a factory hitch. Anyone without a hitch gets a Mopar hitch, probably without wiring; anyone with an aftermarket hitch can get a Mopar hitch, same on wiring; anyone who had a Mopar hitch installed after purchase can get reimbursement if able to provide some sort of documentation; anyone with a Mopar hitch can have it inspected I presume for proper mounting (have no clue if rust would lead to replacement - hint you might want to take the rusty hitch off before going in an saying it was badly rusted and you removed it X months ago to replace but held off pending the recall that you were just notified about). As for my son and me, we mailed back the response cards on all 3 vehicles - one checked as scrapped and two checked as "inspected" as it's not worth my bother to drive across town to have a perfectly good factory installed Mopar hitch "inspected" at the dealer

wow I have received nothing from Chrysler on this recall at all. I believe my Jeep was originally sold with the Mopar towing package as an option. Maybe that is why I heard nothing.

I got my notice yesterday about the recall and no parts available.

I installed an Etrailer hitch after purchase.

I am willing to unbolt it, have the Mopar hitch installed, then replace the Mopar hitch with my Etrailer hitch if anyone wants the Mopar hitch.

I received the notice yesterday, too.

I got nothing but when I put VIN in online I do qualify. Which is weird because mine came with the hitch already.

Part of the recall will be to inspect the original hitch so everybody should get the notice.

Got my recall yesterday as well. I, too, have a factory hitch.

Same here. Will wait to see if I get a notice. My factory hitch is pretty rusted so a new one would be nice.

I called Chrysler yesterday, while I qualify for the recall the parts are on backorder until August and won't be available anywhere.

Shocker.

Chrysler isn't the only one who has to wait on parts. I worked with a guy who had a V6 Accord and he gets a recall letter that says that his car can catch fire at any time due to a defective power steering hose. It went on to say the parts aren't available right now, we'll be in touch...

I haven't received anything by mail from Chrysler but Carfax has a red alert on my phone app stating I have an open recall. I think it was a no brainer we were getting them too. It would be a hard sell to NHTSA that a diesel vehicle doesn't need to be included in the recall because the fuel isn't volatile. Their answer would be "we still don't want diesel or any other liquid on the highway if it can be avoided!"

I go the recall letter as well, with the notation that the part is on back-order and they will notify me when it becomes available... :SOMBRERO:

Same here. I have the factory wiring as well. It came off the lot new that way... Why in the world does Chrysler not know about factory (or dealer) installed towing packages?

The wiring is separate from the hitch. I'm assuming it isn't included in the recall.

Can some one post a scan of the letter about this? What could go wrong with a plastic fuel tank? And do I really want those clowns touching my fuel system? Now it is getting scarier. :ALONE:

Any fuel tank of any material located behind the axle can be hit in such a manner as to cause it to leak and potentially catch fire. Of course any fuel tank in any location on a vehicle even if "self sealing" can in theory be hit in the same way.

In this case, not sure why KJs are being addressed in lieu of all vehicles with behind the axle fuel tanks but that's a separate issue, DCJs position appears to be that adding a good (read Mopar) hitch will provide some semi-behind the frame rails protection to the fuel tank at least in low speed rear end collisions. I won't comment on how much.

The letter simply says a) in certain situations your fuel tank may be hit and caused to leak with some fire hazard; b) DCJ will address this in the future when parts are available by installing a Mopar hitch if you have no hitch, replacing your existing hitch if the one you have is not Mopar, inspecting your Mopar hitch for proper installation and/or condition, or reimbursing you for previously paying to have a Mopar hitch installed if the vehicle did not come from the factory with one. This process does NOT involve any work on the fuel system unless you count hitch bolts near the fuel tank as work on the fuel system.

Personally I'd hoped DCJ would go with a fuel tank skid but that did not happen.

I received my notice last week, but all it said was that I was eligible for the install but that they did not have any and would let me know when they arrived. I already have a no-name hitch(at least I cant find the name) but I think i am going to remove it so that I can get the factory unit and buy the 7 pin mount that goes on it.

FYI, if anyone is considering adding trailer wiring, the install was very easy despite what other threads may say. The interior panels come apart very easy. The hardest part was passing the battery connection through the rubber boot on the fire wall. I could have done the whole job in ~45 minutes if I had not decided to go to home depot half way through the install. The only issue I ran into was that the cigarette lighter connection was intended for Liberty's with the lighters on the left side of the console(pre-05?) whereas my '06 was on the right side. This caused the part of the wiring that runs under the drivers side of the dash to come up a little short, not enough to cause a problem though.

Check status of recalls (need last 8 digits of VIN): http://www.chrysler.com/webselfservice/ ... ame=recall

Here is what mine says. It links to "N46.pdf" but when I click the link I get a Page not Found error.
