Well as some of you have read in a other post I had issue's everything is point to a burnt out clutch pack for the over drive. Now I was going to pull the tranny and take it somewhere as I never worked on a auto before ever ( beside's fluid change's ) how hard is it to replace the clutch pack's? I may also do the upgraded TC while it is apart

Definitely do the torque converter while it's out! My understanding is that this trans is a bit of a bear to pull compared to some. Where are you located? I have "A Guy" is you are in the greater L.A. (Southern Cali) area.

This trans is one of the easiest i have ever pulled. Not shitting when I say, I can have it out in 45min.

What is the best way to get at the torque converter bolts to unbolt it from the flex plate?

Slide underneath. Unbolt the reinforcing collar/inspection plate (8 bolts). Rotate crank with breaker bar and socket. Unbolt each of the four bolts in turn.

I think you need a 15mm socket - and one extension - for the collar. An 18mm reg. or short socket for the torque converter bolts. And a 21 or 22mm socket for the crank (can't remember, it's in my lugnut set).

Think I found it, How many bolt's are on the TC? it said 4 I thought there was 8

There are four bolts.

From under the truck reach up the driver's (left) side of the bell-housing adapter. About half way up you will find a plastic cover clipped on the front of the adapter. Remove this cover. Rotate the engine clockwise until you can remove the first bolt, it's metric... 17 or 19mm iirc. Mark your crank pulley with a paint marker or something, and rotate the engine 90* clockwise. Remove the second bolt, rotate and remove until all four bolts are off. Reinstall is reverse, torque at 180* sequencing allowing the rotation of the TC to bind the socket against the adapter plate when torquing.

Follow the full trans/t-case removal instructions in the manual. Drop the t-case first, then drop the trans... PITA to do them as one unit unless you have a lift and a trans stand to work with.

Make sure you do the flow-test before buttoning it all back up.

Use a pile of extensions to reach the top two bell-housing to block bolts from the rear of the trans.. it's the easiest method. Lower the trans below it's normal mounting position a few inches to allow better access to the top two bolts.

Shoot me a PM if you have any questions. I did a full trans swap this past summer and learned a TON on the way... and yes, you can have it out in under an hour if you are handy with tools.

I removed valve body to make sure it wasn't a bad accumator plate but upon removal I seen it said "transgo" so I assume its aftermarket? Also if u look at pics the one piston is different is does not have a thing in spring like others is that normal?

ymmv, but I got a used tranny on eBay from an auto recycler with fewer miles on it than mine. And it came with a (small) warranty.

It's been flawless since I put it in. Still have mine and have a rebuild kit (and the specialty tools) and will rebuild it, but mine's been great.

All the local transmission shop's have said im looking at $2000+ for a rebuild I think that is insane I found 2 tranny's on craigslist for about $400 but one is out of a durango and other out of a older gas liberty but I am not sure if they are the same or not ( both 4wd ) but Im going to have a buddy who work's as a tech at a dealer and see what he want's to rebuild it also going to do the rear main seal as it look's like it was leaking at one time

45rfe and 5-45rfe are the same trans. The only difference is the tcu programming. When you put the 45rfe into your crd it then becomes a 5-45rfe. I just put a rebuilt 45rfe from a 02 liberty into my crd.

They are all the same. 45rfe and 5-45rfe don't have a removable bell housing. the bell housing and Trans body are all once cast part.
