Post subject:  Stock electric fan plug location. Help!
Trying to put a stock HD cooling system back on my CRD. Had an aftermarket electric only when I got it. Where is the connector for the stock electric fan on the inside of the radiator? Parts drawing looks like the plug is at the top of radiator, but the fan has the wire running down with the fan mounted in the shroud and the blade on the radiator side, as indicated by the blade direction arrow. Cant find a loose connector anywhere near the radiator.

I ran out and looked at my Jeep. The fan wiring runs to the left (passenger side) the plug is just under the air inlet, just right of the Left fog lamp. You may need to remove the airbox to find it.

There is a loose plug there, but a different style.
Anywhere to find a wiring diagram?

Also, anyone, does it split off from the same bundle as the A/C fan plug? I've got a pin-style plug there, and my fan has a 3 wire, horizontal blade type plug. Possible they used a different connector in this application?

If you look in Sams Noob Guide there is a link to the Service Manuals of most KJs (not 2004...use the 2003 Manual).

These include the circuit diagrams....which also show the locations of most connectors and the location of the fan relay....which is where your fan wiring will want to go :)

BillWill, the wiring diagrams show 1 connector for what looks like the A/C fan, from what I've read, all the CRD's had 2 electric fans and the mechanical. I've got another plug coming out next to the front A/C fan connector, I assume it's for the other fan. Need to find the female side or make my own. Not sure how to test that connection, wiring diagram shows a low and high speed relay, presumably in the power distribution module..going to need to dig deeper into the manual to figure this out. The connector shown in the manual looks similar to the one on the fan, different from the one I found.

Island CRD... My CRD and everyone i have seen have ONE electric fan and a mechanical fan. yes it dose look like a three wire flat plug.

The CRD has one electric fan with two speeds. There is a High Speed Relay and a Low Speed Relay in the PDC under the hood.

What year is your CRD...so I can look up the correct circuit diagram! :wink:

Looking at the 2005 CRD circuit diagram (8W-30-37) the fan should have a Black wire for the fan ground, a Dark Green/Dark Blue wire for High Speed and a Dark Blue/Dark Green for Low speed.

The ECM decides which of the two relay coils to supply ground to so either high or low is activated; fuse 2 and fuse 16 need to be OK.

If you remove the two relays you can jumper pins 30 and 87 together in the relay socket of the Low speed relay and the fan should go at low speed. Remove this jumper and put it in pin 30 and 87 of the High speed relay and the fan should run at high speed. The two relays locations will be marked on the Lid of the PDC under the hood. :)

BillWill, there is a fan in front of the radiator stack behind the grill, and another on the engine side that is attached to the shroud. This inside fan is part of the heavy duty cooling kit that is no longer available, so I bought the parts, shroud, clutch, fan, and electric fan. There are some threads discussing the HD cooling kit, my understanding was that that was standard on the CRD's. Mine's an '05. The mopar # for the kit is 82206937, I would assume the wiring harness has a plug for the internal fan.

papaindigo, that looks like he was trying to put the HD kit on a gas engine, they put those on at the factory with a tow package. I thought the CRD had them stock with a 2 speed electric fan. still looking for a connector..

No, the CRDs had one mechanical fan behind the stack, and a two-speed electrical one in front. That's all!

After looking at the parts pics, it seems you're right. I read a couple of threads somewhere where people put the HD cooling kit on the CRD, for the new clutch and better plastic fan, and the electric fan that comes with the kit is bigger than the front fan, I'm thinking of losing the front fan and putting in the mechanical and shroud fan, the fan controller should work the same. Any thoughts?

Does anyone have a part number for the fan shroud? I got a 52080127AA, and it isn't right. The tabs for the screws are a few inches too high. I keep getting this on searches, or 5143022AA, which looks like an electric fan shroud. The radiator for the 2.8 is different in parts pics, with the lower tabs, but the shroud pics always show high tabs. Frustrating. I'm going to hack up this one for now, since it's too scratched to return, but if anyone has the correct part number or a source for used parts, it would help. Thanks.

The parts pictures are not always the best to put it mildly so:
1. consider why do you want the shroud for the mechanical fan that's on the front of the block? It doesn't serve all that much cooling function; rather it's mainly a finger guard to keep idiots from feeding their hands into a moving fan. There are a number of folks who are running without it or running with only the top 1/2, above the bolt tabs, installed.
2. 5143022AA appears (a dealer could confirm) to be the correct part number notwithstanding the parts picture. At least the one for sale on UK ebay is without a doubt a KJ CRD mechanical fan shroud.
3. if you really want one they are not that expensive although shipping might be modestly costly based on size not weight.

The gas V6 nylon fan is not actually "better". The OEM metal fan moves quite a bit more air. However, I (and others) use the nylon fan in conjunction with an aftermarket Hayden fan clutch that engages at a lower temperature than stock. This clutch is essential when towing heavy loads in hot weather. However, this lowers fuel mileage when not towing. The nylon fan has less mass that has to be accelerated and less drag when the clutch is engaged, so it allows you to claw back some mileage lost due to the Hayden.

If you never tow, you can remove the mechanical fan for most of the year, except when it gets into the 90s and above and you are stuck in traffic. Many people run without a mechanical fan. GDE has found you gain 1-2 MPG by removing the mechanical fan.
