Post subject: | AC Pulley Seized |
AC pulley did not turn when my wife started up the Jeep this AM, throwing off and tearing up my almost new serpentine belt. Anyone know if it makes sense to replace just the AC clutch if it is not the whole compressor that has seized? Thanks! DOC |

Doc, Here is what I found on the net regarding seized AC pulley. "If the belt has been removed because the pulley wasn't turning with ac on or off, it will be the clutch bearing. To confirm grasp the most outer plate of the clutch (forward of the belt pulley) and try to turn it. If that moves but the pulley won't the compressor is not seized. The clutch can be repaired without discharging the system and removing the compressor. If you're handy and have access to the pullers, it's under $30. I don't know what a shop would charge, couple hundred I would think. If the compressor is seized you would be looking at a lot bigger job. New/reman compressor is likely $225+, the system will have to be flushed, new dryer, recharge etc. I would think $500 or more at a shop." |

ID parts says clutch is same price as compressor. Where did you learn KJ CRD clutch can be replaced without removing compressor? Thanks, DOC |

I searched for Denso ac clutch bearing repair and had multiple hits. The tech stated that the clutch bearing can be replaced without removing the compressor or discharging the refrigerant. One hit was of a YouTube video on how to replace the bearing. |
