Saturday i went wheelin. Nothing to serious, my usual place. I was running 1.7 ish bar tyre pressure as it was rocky with loose rocks and some loose rock climbs inbetween. Nothing unusual happened, except the toyota landcruiser prado that got stuck on loose rock.

I did not inflate the tyres before i headed home like i always do. I thought it is not that far home. About 5km (3miles) away from the place the abs and brake lndicator light on the dash came on. I slowed down and tested the brakes and found them to be working.
My wife now realised that the tripmeter and odometer is also not picking up/working. I did the key trick for the code read and got 3 codes.
P0510
P1206
P1685

Now my search for answers got me to: batery disconnected. I replaced it recently.
Low/high voltage to injectors and something about short circuit or something to throttle sensor.
I dont see anything about the abs.
No damaged cables, no excessive mud, brake fluid level is good, brake pads are good.

What can i check for? Does the key trick for code retrievel work for the abs system as well?

Any help/ advise will be much appreciated. :banghead:

Most likely a wheel sensor. Either the sensor itself or the connection to it. Try doing a search on here, it's a fairly common issue.

Yep, sensor is in the hub, so hose off the front wheels. Also check the sensor on the rear differential. I've had to replace the wiring to the diff sensor as the wires were broken inside the insulation due to stress and vibration. I alse have replaced the sensor once.

Yep most likely a wheel sensor. On the 05 there are 3; 1 for each front wheel and 1 on the differential. As mentioned that differential one can die due to a wire break inside the insulation which can be spliced around.

I will hose tomorrow. It is night time this side of the world. I also will check the rear sensor for wiring. Can i test it somehow? I have spare sensors for the front. Did catch a bit of mud on the right hand side. Were in much deeper mud before without issues

This post, viewtopic.php?f=98&t=61983, addresses the front sensors. I recall seeing a post about how to check the wires on that rear sensor but unfortunately did not save the link. I'd suggest you email or PM bugnout and ask how the work was done.

Initially my bet would be on the front given what you were doing. On reinstall you might want to add a bit of dielectric grease to the contacts to keep water out in the future.

Wirin to the rear sensor gives a reading of 11.47 V. Is that good or bad?
I am going to test the front now.

I also managed to bust the securing clip on the rear sensor plug. Typical!!
I'll fasten it some how, either silicon sealer or something

Most likely the wheel sensors got disturbed, dirty or wiring got broken.

You expect to see +12 volts on the sensors when standing still...11.47 is probably OK but always make sure the battery connections are clean and tight, the negative lead to chassis is clean and tight and the strap grounding the engine to chassis is clean and tight on both ends.

Have you had the rear diff lubrication replaced since you have owned the Jeep?

There was a TSB issued for all 2005 KJs...not sure if this includes Export models...stating that the wrong lubricant was put into the rear diff which had the habit of chewing up the sensor on the diff. The Dealers had to drain the oil, clean out the diff and fit a new sensor. Unlikely that this is your problem seeing as it happened after dirt-driving but bear it in mind!

I have about 110 000 miles on it. I replaced the diff oil at about 55 000 miles.

Where is the abs computer placed? I can check contiuity of wiring there faster.

I will check the earths as well.

How do i test front abs sensors? I have 2 spare that came with new front hubs. Do i just replace them because i can?

Left front has continuity
Rear has continuity
Right front i can not disconnect the plug at this point. Big hands and bigger forearms with tight space does not work well.

Will try again later tonight when i get back.

All sensor wires tested good with conductivity.
I removed the rear diff sensor and found it full of metal flakes.

This has me concerned for two things.
1. Diff is/might be going
Extent of the damage.

I am going to drain the oil now and look for debris. Can I do about 50 mile without slip additive tomorrow?

I know i need the additive for limiting slip, bu i dont have any now with me.

I need to inspect the rar end while i have time for it.

I did not have sealer for the rear diff plate. I only stopped uphill and drained some oil from the fill hole. Shining a bright torch onto the running oil, i could see metal particles. It does not however feel coarse/rough to the touch. I did this after driving for about 2 miles, just to mix it up good.

I will get slip additive and some sealing compound and do it one night during the week.

I wonder wether the debris is from the gears/bearings or from the abs ring on the inside.
Will i be able to get a hand on it from the back to feel for its condition? I might cut another finger, but it needs to be verified. I cant strip the diff to check and then find it bad and leave it. For now the wife can drive it. I will also get a price for the rear sensor.
Also the price for a second hand diff and for a rebuild.

How do I reset the abs fault light? The manual state do abs verification test.
