I was just CRDing ebay and found this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-2007-Jeep- ... fe&vxp=mtr
I thought the turbo was not rebuildable. Does any one knows anything about these turbo parts?

The official line from Garett is that it isn't rebuildable but in reality, it probably is. I may be wrong but I suspect that the Garetts reasons for not rebuilding these turbos are more business related than technical. For a company that specialises in rebuilding turbos it may be easier to make a business case.

In this case is it a good quality, reliable, properly balanced cartridge that will have a decent life expectancy or just some poorly built chimport? Who knows. I guess there's only one way to find out.

I bought a rebuilt turbo on Ebay for one of my Jeeps from a company in California. I think it now has about 10k miles on it and no problems. The same company also sells a brand new turbo that is a Chinese clone of the Garrett as well as the genuine Garrett: http://www.buyautoparts.com/buynow/2006 ... 19_AN.html

IMHO I would stay away from any chinese parts, specifically a turbo!! The OEM turbos have enough issues, why would you want to risk it? Maybe if your just going to go trade it in (not worth much anyway) but if you plan on keeping the CRD then just pick up an OEM turbo.

From the pictures it appears that at the end of the compressor shaft it has a nut on it, while the one I disassembled did not. Also it may be difficult to get the compressor housing orientated correctly to get your vacuum actuator in the correct position.

They have remanufactured Garretts on that buyautoparts site. Anyone try one? $650 sounds tempting. Not sure if anyone responds to these old posts....

Hi Mountainman,
Yes that is the turbo that I bought for my wife's. It has over 10k miles on it and no problems. Buyautoparts usually has a sale/coupon, so you can actually get it cheaper if you hit it at the right time (sign up for their email offers OR try to "like" them on Facebook!).

thanks Jay! I'm doing the oil pressure guage mod with an 85 decibel alarm, so if my turbo ever blows, hopefully it doesn't wipe anything when I shut it down in 2 seconds. Do you remember how much cheaper you got yours?

I managed to get mine when they had a 10% off. I think it was around $585, which was half of a new Garrett. I did the installation myself. I kept the old turbo with the plan to rebuild it someday to use as a spare. But when I can get a rebuilt for less than $600, it probably is not worth doing the rebuild myself.

When my original turbo blew, it was pretty obvious with the loss of power and trail of black smoke. I was actually able to travel about a half mile and still had a little bit of oil left in the pan (low oil pressure light never came on). If this happens to you, then make sure to clean the oil out of the intercooler before starting it with the new turbo. The new turbo will blow the oil out of the cooler and the engine will run at wide open throttle until the oil is all used up. Pretty scary.

Many thanks for the warning. After all I've read on this, I will have the topside oil pressure alarm, and a block-off for the intake ready just in case it somehow tries to be a "runaway". I'll pull off and have it shutdown and airflow stopped in a few seconds. Cheap insurance for an engine that costs as much as I payed for the whole jeep to rebuild.
