thanks Jay! I'm doing the oil pressure guage mod with an 85 decibel alarm, so if my turbo ever blows, hopefully it doesn't wipe anything when I shut it down in 2 seconds. Do you remember how much cheaper you got yours?
I managed to get mine when they had a 10% off. I think it was around $585, which was half of a new Garrett. I did the installation myself. I kept the old turbo with the plan to rebuild it someday to use as a spare. But when I can get a rebuilt for less than $600, it probably is not worth doing the rebuild myself.
When my original turbo blew, it was pretty obvious with the loss of power and trail of black smoke. I was actually able to travel about a half mile and still had a little bit of oil left in the pan (low oil pressure light never came on). If this happens to you, then make sure to clean the oil out of the intercooler before starting it with the new turbo. The new turbo will blow the oil out of the cooler and the engine will run at wide open throttle until the oil is all used up. Pretty scary.
