I had an intermittent issue like this and it was caused by some antifreeze getting spilled on the belt. Just hit is with the garden hose and all was fine. Did you get any thing slippery on the belt?

The only two things I can think of, assuming belt is on right, are:
1. failure of the alternator pulley caused the serp belt tensioner to fail hence the belt is not tight enough to drive the power steering pump. Is the serp belt tensioner leaning into the power steering pulley? Is so it's dead.
2. coincidental failure of power steering pump.

That makes good sense about the tensioner, considering it is right next to the pump. It does not take much belt slipping to lose power steering.

well here's the rest of the story,, went back the next day and the floor was covered with oil-- huh!! i spent a hr the day before screwin w the thing and it wasn't leaking a drop,, filled the res back up and turned the wheels back and forth a bunch of times ,, no leaks, yet been drivin 2 days,,, so what happened??? only thing i can determine is when i towed it i turned the wheel about a 1/2 turn lt w/o power into the driveway causing the Lt rack seal to leak and it filled the boot up which leaked out overnite, but now its not...bizarre yes-- no

I assume you mean power steering fluid not oil. That said keep an eye on the level and here's hoping you found a cheap fix.
