Wanted to share a cheap and quick intake mod I did.

What you will need.

AEM dry wash filter with 3" ID. Not the oil type. This type filter catches a lot more than the K&N type.

3" hose clamp.

3" x 6" piece of exhaust pipe.

1/8" brass nipple.

Filter minder. Your choice of brand.

Some sort of Strapping steel.. See pic. You'll get the idea.

Remove air box

AEM filter.

Strapping material.
Image

3" exhaust pipe drilled and tapped with 1/8 nipple
Image

Install exhaust pipe into factory intake hose. Tight fit but it works. Wrap the strapping material around the pipe to reinforce and bolt to the stud and factory nut underneath.
Image

Install cone filter and filter minder.
Image

Less than $75.00. 1/2 hour labor

For anyone that wants to know I have been running this for over a year, no issues. Just got around to finally posting..

Enjoy.

Where did you put the two sensors, that came out of your air box?

I don't. I couldn't find it. I purchased from Advanced Auto parts. Here is a link to the AEM site for universal dry flow filters. As you can see they have A Lot of filters in the 3" range. Take a look. Just about anyone will work. This is not hard to find.

I just tied up the connectors. I left the sensors in the air box I removed. I have the GDE tune so they are useless.

I am thinking of doing this soon, but will also be building a 'box' out of metal sheets from home depot then somewhat sealing them to isolate the air from engine heat. Probably make a template out of cardboard then snip the metal sheets to shape. Will post pictures when done.

I've also been looking at trying to use the 'custom' intake parts like the elbows and silicone couplers that auto zone has to make my own turbo inlet piece instead of the OEM, but a) not sure if it will fit in that tight turbo exit space, and b) not sure if it will be any better airflow than stock.

Thanks for posting,
Aras

Hoping the others will chime in, I was not aware the green diesel tune bypassed the maf sensor. Anyone able to verify?

Im surprised the haters haven't commented yet. I myself am going to do this as well because I would like more turbo noise.

I'm not sure what the air temperature sensor is used for, but the MAF sensor is only used in EGR valve control. If unplugged, the EGR valve doesn't operate, but also throws a CEL. Since the GDE tune does use the EGR valve at times, unplugging it will merely disable the valve completely but not throw the CEL.

Can someone chime in on what uses the air temp sensor?

Keith from GDE confirmed that the air temp sensor is also not used when running the GDE tunes.

According to some on this list, the MAF is used in the fuel control maps for smoke limiting even after disabling the EGR controls?
Anyone have any information on this???

Very groovy set up! Nice work.

Just wondering...I heard "something" a while ago, that diesels don't dig cold air as much as petrol engines do. Are you finding this set up has your engine running better, more responsive, etc...?

Cheers and great post.

I also did this recently with an off-the-shelf K&N from O'Reilly Auto Parts. I wasn't looking for performance just mostly for the extra "noise" from the turbo. I wasn't aware that the two sensors weren't used, I made provisions for them both in the hard adapter pipe. From my research I identified the small sensor to be the TIP sensor (Throttle Inlet Pressure). From what I understand the TIP compares atmospheric pressure (or close to it) against the MAP sensor reading to help determine boost pressure for the ECU.

Before my GDE tune the TIP came unplugged and immediately caused huge performance losses and terrible drivability issues. After that I figured it must be highly important and incorporated it into my modification.

If it is inactive it might find a new home in the "useless OEM parts" pile.

I did this mod but could not find any local AEM sellers, so I ordered my parts from Amazon.
I went with a cheaper chinese copy of the AEM filter. It was about $8 so I ordered two plus
$6 shipping and the AEM pre-filter "sock" ($25) to go over it.
I left the MAF unplugged (EGR is blocked) and zip-tied that airbox sensor thingy to the filter
neck.

Nice intake, just looking for a afe filter. Just wondering how long and wide of a filter, I could fit properly in that empty space?

What type of driving you do and how many miles does the filter last you?

Now that I have tried this mod I can safely say that I don't like it and do not recommend it for anyone.
It seemed to work great during the cold months but now that 90 deg temps are normal weather, I have found that the engine gets really sluggish when hot.
Sucking all the hot air from under the hood has raised intake temps and lowered turbo boost.
I have now switched back to the stock filter setup and normal performance has returned.

2 years ago I had developed something similar and was running with it for about 4 months just before my head gasket leak occurred.

I was informed by one of the techs at VM North America that the engine needs outside ambient air at all times and that my air intake set up is not a good way to supply air to the engine.

Heated engine air should not be reintroduced back into the engine.
