Wife went to engage part-time 4WD while in DRIVE, but did not actually engage 4WD. She moved to the next detent, "Full-Time" was displayed and 4WD WAS engaged. After getting out of the deep snow area, she then attempted to place in 2WD. The lever appeared to go into the 2WD position, 2WD appeared to be engaged, but "Part-Time" was displayed.

I was hoping it was just an indicator issue, but when I got home and checked it out, the lever was locked in what appears to be the 2WD position and will not move at all, no matter what I tried.

Dropped off at a friend's shop.

Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks as always,

DOC

After being parked in a nice warm shop for an hour, the lever moved normally, but "part-time" was still displayed when it clearly was in 2WD. However, after putting in 4WD Lo, the display went out when the lever was moved back into the 2WD position.

Is it possible that water can get into the cable/mechanism somewhere, then freeze and jam the lever?

Thanks!

Not sure about Jeep but my Dodge plow trucks would freeze in 4 or 2 once and awhile. And sometimes refuse to go in 4 low.
It was ice.
Now my KK stuck in 4 low before.
I shut engine of with it in N. Restarted and it was fine. Where I worked had KK's to, happen to another one the same day. I told them my cure and it worked for them.

Sorry doc I decided to pull it as it was probably too obvious.
In essence it said:
It may be as simple as the cotton reel white nylon linkage roller on the side of the t/f case.
I hope this is it - a really easy fix. They are seemingly the weak link (pardon the pun).
I also said - Yet another item I, at least am planning on re-designing when it fails for me and apparently this is likely if you use the selector a bit or at least making it out of better polymer. I'll at least use Nylobloc that is graphite impregnated.

I hope it is that simple for you.

I follow this board pretty carefully and what you referenced was certainly not obvious to me, so thank you for your input.

My hood froze shut and wouldn't unlatch in -10 and may have a similar cable system.

It was a stuck detent. Replaced with one from an NP241. Works much better than ever.
