Now this might just be my OCD when it comes to strange noises that 95% of other owners wouldn't notice, I spent a day trying to sort out a rattle creak noise that was driving me mad by having the wife drive up and down a rough track with me sat in the boot.

I've had the Jeep about two months, I'm fairly confident that it didn't make the ticking noise when I first picked it up. It is only really there on start up and lasts until warmed up. It's probably nothing but I'm wondering if it could be because of the oil I used when I first got it.

I changed air filter, oil filter, oil, fuel filter, blocked the erg off cleaned the map sensor and did the elephant hose mod so it should be running as well as it can. It's an 04 with 86000 miles and has been looked after judging by its condition and service history.

I used a generic oil that was recommend by the parts suppling website 10w40 but semi synthetic. Would this be a possible reason for the ticking? It sounds like it comes from underneath, it's from the engine as stationary it makes the noise and increases when revved.

It could all just be my dog like hearing as most of the time the wife never notices but saying that a wheel could fall off and she'd merrily bounce down the road!

Sounds like it could be an exhaust leak. Did you use diesel oil?

Yeah, the oil is for diesel engines. When I crawled under trying to pinpoint the noise it was around the exhaust bottom of the block area. I tried putting a long screwdriver against different parts of the engine and to my ear to try and find an exact area but couldn't narrow the location. I'll have a look under tomorrow to see if it could be the exhaust .

It may be the lifters ticking. This engine has the ticking sound that's more pronounced than other diesel engines. It increases with thinner oil. I still have it with new rocker/lifter set.

If it is an exhaust leak, they do tend to tick till the metal heats up and expands and closes the opening up thus the ticking may slowly disappear as the the engine warms up.
Best way to find an elusive exhaust leak, get yourself a 2 to 3 foot piece of flexible rubber or plastic tubing in at least 5/16in / 8mm size or greater, place one end to your ear and use the other end to move all around and over the exhaust manifold joints, gaskets, etc... when you first start a cold engine. Using this old time mechanic trick, you can find any exhaust leak very quickly.

They do make automotive stethoscopes that you can purchase if you desire, but a listening hose will work just as well! I have found a many an exhaust leak using this method!!! :)

I had a tick tick tick exhaust leak and traced it to the flex joint.
The noise went away when I deleted the cat. (weird)

I had another ticking noise that turned out to be a broken transmission dipstick tube.
