I tend to agree with Geordi. Your issue is probably more related to air in your fuel because of how long you had the system apart. When I did my first set of rockers and lifters I had the intake apart for days waiting on all my parts, and when I put it back together I was sure I did something wrong, that there was a rocker or lifter issue because of the tapping/clicking/pinging sound I was hearing when I started it up. It was all air in the fuel and after it ran for a bit all put together, it was fine.
It's scary stuff the first time, I'll admit, but once you get used to it and hear those sounds it's no big deal. I nearly took mine back apart too for fear of something wrong. I definitely understand your position.
Keep bleeding the fuel head, put it all the way back together and let it run for a bit, you'll see.
If you had a bad crush washer (You did replace all 4 of those didn't you?) then it might be sucking air there, but it would be "spitting air" as well and making all kinds of fun noises, I had my first run-in with that about 8 weeks after the rocker/lifter change out. [Guess I didn't clean it enough and ensure a good seal like Geordi was also talking about]
Most of the advice guys like he and I give are from bad experiences, I know you can't learn from other people's mistakes or misfortunes, but try.
