The head gasket is a minimum 18 hour job, that is book value. A shop may charge you more based on actual hours used, since they won't have a clue about the procedure if they haven't seen the vehicle before. Conservatively, it could be 25 hours of labor. Depending on your shop's rate, that could be $130/hr or more, plus the amorphous "shop supplies" charges. So conservatively, $3250 or more in labor. Then there is the parts cost. RARE is the shop that will use parts you bring in, and that means they will be buying from the dealer. So... (Are you sitting down?) $300-$600 for the gasket and the bolt set $1200 for the rockers $60 for the valve cover gasket $40 for both the timing cover gaskets $20 for both the intake gaskets $300 for the OEM water pump $150 for the thermostat and gasket $60 for the exhaust manifold gaskets $25 for the turbo gaskets $300 for the belt $80 for the idlers $60-$80 for the tensioner $200 for the glow plugs - WITH a computer modification... which is dealer only. Potentially $2735 just in parts. Then there is the taxes too. Then... Will they reassemble everything correctly and with the proper torque? The average shop will not have the factory service manual, they will only have the Alldata information. This is the same data that apparently told a mechanic to put 80 lbs of torque on the timing tensioner! Now, how about me? Parts are from IDparts, because I know they have quality components. Some of these numbers are my best guess, I don't have Corey's prices memorized, but I know they are much better than a dealer's insane rates. $340 Rocker set $300 head gasket $40 but the Valve cover gasket usually isn't needed $0 for the turbo gaskets (reused) $0 for the exhaust manifold gaskets (reused) $0 for the thermostat (Don't remove it) $100 for the glow plugs, and no computer modifications. $400 for the entire timing kit that comes with just about everything else. So $1180 in parts, and no tax b/c of interstate shipping. This job still sucks, and it is a solid 2 full days of work no matter which way you slice it. If the head doesn't need to completely come out, (it doesn't for the gasket if you have a way of lifting it slightly, like an engine hoist) then that can save a good bit of work by not removing the turbo. I also don't disassemble the entire front end or need to lift the car / engine for anything, which saves time and possible damage / mistakes. I would charge $2100 for the labor, but that includes everything completely installed AND the travel costs with 3 nights of hotel. Here is the biggest benefit however - I am already out here, so the travel cost is minimized compared to a special trip at some future date. Let me know quick if you might be interested in this. I might be interested once I get my taxes back. I either going to re do the top or sell. I had the timing belt and everything but the water pump at 138000 now 180000. Would you do a torque converter. Would you think the cams or no. 3200 is that right |
