Well, I have another one on my list, but if the head is cracked, I lose big! Any advice?

You can get a used head from VM specialists in the UK for about $475.

I have yet to read a post where a cracked head was the cause of combustion leakage, maybe some one else has?

I had a cracked head replaced under extended warranty

only symptom was killing glow plug number 2 - it would spray coolant on them.

they found it by pressurizing the radiator and leaving it overnight -first thing in the morning - the glow plug had antifreeze on it.

(ran great the entire time -no performance issues)

Interesting, thanks for that. At least the heads are of good enough quality and design that we don't hear about many cracks. I'm glad they found it when still under warranty!

My CRD is on its 3rd head. First two warped and allowed combustion gas past the head gasket. Gasses eventually ate through the gasket and would blow a whole reservoir of coolant out the overflow every few miles.

It actually just started doing it again (got a low coolant light after a 100-mile drive on Sunday - sure enough, overflow is full) so I am ditching this rig. Bought an 07 Grand Cherokee CRD this morning. I'm planning to donate my KJ to charity for the tax write off. It's worth ~$7,500 at auction (problem isn't bad enough that it will be detected at auction) so w/ a 40% tax rate makes it worth $3,000 cash. If anyone wants it for that price they're welcome to it.
