I know there has been this discussion before, but has anyone got a source for a european manual trans flywheel that is fitted to Liberty CRD engine? I understand that it was available in europe. I have chance pick up a 06 Liberty CRD on the cheap, ie. needs work. I hate automatics.

These guys are in England. Mind the Time difference if you're going to call them. They can source you just about anything export.

Have fun with VAT!

Btw, some of the items from Amazon.co.uk are vat excluded, not sure if vm specialist has an account there. Also, not sure what the legislation is in UK, but vat should be 0 for exports. I do see a lot of vat charges for export order. Vat is 19%btw... You may have more luck outsourcing one from Germany, I'm pretty sure they don't charge it.

On the other hand, PM sir Sam, he knows a lot of stuff for swapping a manual in kj, I think the nsg370 would fit the crd engine and there are also some adapters for fitting ax15, which seems to still be a very appreciated transmission. If you really want to swap a manual, my money is on ax15, even though it has only 5 gears, the 5th ratio is better than 6th for nsg370. Plus it's a proven transmission, cheaper, and way easier to maintain versus pickier nsg370.

VMdieselspecialist didn't charge me VAT, and they shouldn't - it is being shipped to a non-Eurozone country.

I was about to pull the trigger on a swap when I killed my 545rfe. I canceled the project for three reasons.
1. I would loose the NP242.
2. I would loose pedal to foot ratio of equilibrium.
3. I would see only negligible fuel economy increases.

That being said...

From USDM v6;
Pedal box
Clutch master/slave/lines
Shifter and assorted bits
6spd trans
Rear drive shaft (front is debatable, would need to check the parts list)
Np231 t-case
Trans cross member
Some bits of body harness (or you can modify the auto harness as needed)
Bcm from same year/like equipped 6spd truck

From GDE (or other tuner);
Reflash of ecu to manual trans settings

From LTI parts house (UK)
Flywheel, clutch, and assorted bits for a LTI TX4

There will be some headaches along the way, but that is where I was in my swap process till cooler heads prevailed.

I agree with Rich, it is a lot of headache to swap a manual. And a lot of money.

Rich, do you remember a rough estimate on how much that would have cost? Just curious.

If you used the 5 speed transmissions, AX15 or NV3550 you could retain the NP242. They both will mount to the NV231 and NV242.

I don't see why the NP/NV242 cannot bolt to the NSG370, anyone care to inform me?

If you go the NV3550 route there is a specific PN for the NV3550 CRD bellhousing that you can purchase in the US.

If it has the same mounting as a 241 t-case and same input as a 241 then it could but drivability issues when in full time on pavement and why the 242 t-case was never offered behind a manual trans.

My dealer (hard core Jeep guy) told me that purists with a manual trans would not get full time transfer case and that is why marketing never put the two together. With full time option and center differential (NV242), there should be less drivability issues in full time that with the NV231 locked in part time.

Can you confirm or exclude that the mounting is different and therefor cannot bolt together?

Nope but I know the 241J(or rocktrac) t-case is what was put behind the 6 speeds and I also know that the 6 speed rocktrac can not be used behind a auto trans.

Why not just do a Cummins 4BT with a Ford 4sp manual or a 6sp out of a late dodge pickup. Drop right in and get 35-40 mpg. And the simplicity of a P-pumped diesel.

... Because it won't fit in the front end of a Liberty? You wouldn't be able to close the hood, they are too tall of an engine, and HEAVY.

Tell me more about how that "drops right in"?

Zzzzacktly! Maybe for someone who does brain surgery for a living and moonlights as an auto customizer and mechanic AND computer programmer... Then it might be "easy" and "drop right in" but with the complexity of these modern vehicles... Not a bloody chance that ANYONE in their right mind would call it easy after looking at all the steps.

The thing about the 4BT is its about as far from "drop right in" as you can imagine, lots of custom fab work to make it fit. The manual conversion is about as "drop right in" as you can get.

I am in the process of selling my liberty, I want a 4bt in a jeep. I was going to put a 4BT in my liberty and after about 2 months of research, I was going to be cheaper to get a Wrangler body and a 4BT and go that route than in the liberty, it's to much money and to much time to put it in a liberty, so with the last couple of posts saying it won't fit, you are exactly right IT WONT, I did 2 months worth of reading and measurements.

I have put an nv242 in 5 of 6 manual trans xj/MJ I have owned.

Not a single issue doing so. Worked fantastic. If you take a million years between shifts, I could see where the input would "slip" as if it had a slipping axle, but as the 242 has a differential rather than viscous coupler, wear would be negligible.

When in gear, it functions just as designed.

And there is absolutely zero chance that the 242 could affect the synchros in any manual trans.

I was just reading a Liberty TDI swap thread over on the TDIclub and the guy doing the swap said he thinks the crank position sensor for our CRD's is actually mounted in the transmission, making it very difficult to swap to a manual. Not sure if this is true but figured I would throw it out there.
