Anyone tried or used the CARTER P76148M in tank fuel pump module in a CRD?? It looks just like the Airtex E7181M and it is made for the 2005 Dodge diesel. Found some for a better price than the Airtex and the Carter is said to be made in the US? :D

Planning on ordering one unless someone tells me of a problem with them.
They are rated 5 star on the few places I could find a rating on the internet, no negatives. :|

Thoughts?

if it's made for the Dodge - it should work - but you will be the first real test.

As long as it does not put out much more than 6 psi and it can be sucked through in the event it does not run for some reason, it should not hurt anything.

According to Ranger, Carter is the OEM manufacturer in Mexico and sales the units to Mopar and Airtex and other sellers who re-package them and then mark them up and resale them. That is why the Carter price is much lower!
Ordered one yesterday for $75.
Will post pictures and comments when it arrives. stay tuned.... :ALONE:

Please post some side by side photos of this pump with your original sender. While we dont have an airtex to compare to it having some photos against stock would be nice.

If they are the oem supplier to dodge and airtex and this unit is cheaper we should direct people to this product in the future, hence maybe adding this link to the noob guide.

Thanks, bought one too. Dang I just had the tank off and its guts out. I had a P0093 code. Ended up being the pre-filter I had installed before the External lift pump. The internal screen element holding nut had backed off choking the input. I took it apart, drilled bigger holes, installed new screen and made sure the holding nut was tight. Be glad to get rid of this filter and external pump.

Will do as soon as I drop the tank and have them both out side by side!

Good News all! Got the Carter in tank pump installed in the CRD this weekend. It is the exact same housing as the OEM unit with the addition of the pump. Ran into the same tab issue as described on the Airtech. Simply trimmed part of it away to make it fit and have the right orientation just like the OEM. Changed the gauge float arm and used the old one as described in the write up.
Be forewarned, this is a major job to perform, dropping the tank, modifying the wiring harness adding the two wires, 1 male and 2 female terminals to the OEM connectors at the tank and under the back seat. Finding the correct APEX 2.8mm terminals needed for the modification turned out to be the most changeling part of the whole job! :banghead:
Testing all circuits before tank re-install and then re-installing the tank with all the wiring and hoses proper turned out to be some work....Very glad it is all behind me, hope it was worth all the effort? Will test drive tomorrow, test and report. Already noticed a slight change in the sound of the motor at idle...
One note: After I turned the key on with the new pump installed and let it cycle for the 20 seconds or so it runs before starting the engine, I tried to manually pump up the fuel head at the OEM fuel filter and for the first time I have ever experienced it, it was already pumped up very tight, manual pump would not even move!! A very good sign!!!!

Does anyone have the part numbers for the APEX connectors we need?

Does the harness have to be of a 2006(I have a 2006), because I have one of a 2003.

It would help a lot. Should I get myself some fuel and return hoses also with clamp to get ride of the connectors? This is my daily driver and I would like to make sure I will be able to do it over the weekend. I checked all the picture and it look like the harness is too short on the tank side(easy to fix), the wire for the power is in position 3 instead of position 2 on the inside cab plug. Please confirme if I am right. All the other wire should be the same right?? Except for the extra plug on the gas harness that the diesel harness doesn't have.

When using a in-tank lift pump the OEM fittings and hoses will work just fine as long as you do not damage them when disconnecting them to drop the fuel tank. They are designed for positive pressure sealing and do a good job when under pressure but suck at sealing suction when under negative pressure as with a pump located anywhere else other than inside the tank! :P

If you are installing a lift pump outside the fuel tank, I would certainly discard the OEM hoses and fittings and install some marine grade fuel hose and install some band type clamps.

As to the wiring, view these two links below and they should answer any questions concerning installing an in-tank lift pump and wiring it up properly.

Note: I built my own wiring harness using good quality automotive copper wire and the correct APEX 2.8 terminal wire ends. (available on line)

The excellent pics and descriptors in the article should allow for wire availability and color comparison to a harness from any other year model...................

In-tank Carter fuel pump install. Took me 5 1/2 hours with mistakes and troubleshooting. The pump fit perfectly and you can't hear it running from the inside. The motor sounds happier with it. Now am waiting for my thermostat

Great! Good Job, and yes your motor will be happier and idle a little smoother. Others have noticed this after install including myself.... :D
