When I ease into the throttle sometimes I get LOTS of black smoke and no power then it seems to "catch" and pins me to the seat. If I slightly tap the throttle the RPMs move past where it "catches" and moves through the RPMs fine and accelerates normally.

Going to start simple with some injector cleaner and go from there.
Inspecting boost hoses today but they're all new and shouldn't have any problems.
engine was rebuilt less then 6k ago. and otherwise runs great!

HELP! need some ideas where to go from here.

Black smoke would seem to suggest its running rich so not a fueling issue, and if you have no power while running rich then it sounds like it may not be getting boost. Since its intermittent i wanna say its probably not a boost leak and probably a boost control issue like you suggest.

Possibly a sticking turbo veritable vane control mechanism? With engine cool and off, spray the control rod and mechanism down with some WD-40 or like penetrating oil, then manually exercise the control rod up and down and see if you feel any sticking points.
You may want to pull the air box and inlet hose to the turbo so you can watch the turbo vane movement while doing this?
I would also check all associated hoses, plastic tubing on this system for any vacuum leaks.
