Post subject:  Check Engine Light But No OBD 2 Fault Codes Showing.

Hi all,

This morning the Check Engine Light appeared on my 2006 2.8L CRD Liberty. The light was not on last night and only appeared at start up this morning. I took it into a mechanic that does a lot of work on diesels to get it diagnosed. However his OBD 2 code reader turned up no codes. The mechanic said it was spewing more smoke then it should be and there was a vacuum leak he detected. But honestly it made it to the shop with no apparent problems. In the four weeks I have had the CRD it has stalled twice at stop signs after revving funny and below 500 rpm, however both times were right after start up and it immediately started up again with no problem. I am at a complete loss as to what this could be. The mechanic phoned and said the diesel looked funny, however I am 100% sure its diesel in there unless the Petro Canada gas station somehow mixed the tanks. However that doesn't even add up because I filled it up on Monday when I had around 1/8 of a tank remaining and had put 150 km on the new tank of fuel (all city driving) before the light even came on. Is it possible that the quality of diesel is just poor? From what I understand if there was anything but diesel in the tank I would have been lucky to make it more then a few km without a problem. So any advice is much appreciated, the mechanic has been working on it for hours and can't find any reason the Check Engine Light is on.

It might be a transmission problem.
Not all code readers can read Chrysler transmission codes.

Most scanners other than STARSCAN will NOT read ALL engine codes. You need to go to dealer and have them scan it.

I have this same problem. I have taken it everywhere including to a dealership and had them use the stick on it. The service person was quite confused and didn't understand why the engine light was still on if there were no codes.

I have had Autozone and Advance try to use the scanner on it with no results as well as the dealer trying a Matco scanner on it in addition to the stick type code reader.
