I have grease on the transfer case cross member and a sweep

I have grease on the transfer case cross member and a sweep of grease across the floor pan at the front of the transfer case. Is there a grease zirc on the drive shaft in that area?

Any ideas on the source of the grease?

The front driveshaft's rear CV joint? Check the rubber boot in there.

Definitely front driveshaft's rear CV joint. That's what mine looked like when the boot was almost completely torn through.

Or does the front drive shaft only turn when in 4 wheel drive?

I would say that the front input shaft turns all the time?

It turns all the time because there is nothing to decouple it from the front axle or hubs.
It is not being driven by the engine in 2WD, it's just there spinning along with the front wheels.

To that end, you can pull the whole assembly out with nothing more than some PB-Blaster, an 8mm socket with 6-8" extension, and (maybe) a plastic mallet or hammer if it won't come loose by hand. Mine only needed a couple taps with my fist after the 'blaster did its work. I took my time on the rebuild and simply drove around with no front shaft and the t-case in 2wd for about a week. No harm done.

Same here, I removed the driveshaft and drove it for about a week till I got all the parts in to repair/replace the broken joint. :SOMBRERO:
