Post subject:  Special tools-crankshaft replacement
Has anyone replaced a crankshaft yet?

The shop manual mentions Miller tool VM.1079, and VM.9095 to align the crankshaft carriers. The problem is, those tools don't seem to exist. I will be putting my crank in this weekend, but I am not sure I can without those tools.

I see VM. 1069 in the service manual, not VM. 1079

VM. 9095 - Crankshaft Support Retainer is showing in the service manual, but I see nothing online.

I see Snap-On has purchased Miller tools at some point. May be discontinuing some items I would imagine.

Thanks, VM.1079 Central carrier alignment pins is on page 9-1606 of the FSM.

I already have VM.1054.

I assume those 2 tools are to get the crankshaft bearing supports in straight and make sure the oil passages line up.

I know this is an older post, but are these tools needed to reinstall the crank? or is it possible not to use them?(i dont have them and cant seem to find them online anywhere)

You can use a dowel rod as the "alignment tool", and a soft mallet for the carrier pins.

Yeah, just visually match up the oil ports with the bearing, they are offset to make them fairly obvious how they go in. Then use a dead-blow mallet to install the carrier pins.

What I want to know is how to index the balance shafts. Is there a mark on them?

You use a punch or drill bit to index them through 1 of the 4 holes on the bottom of the balance shaft assembly.

I rebuilt mine with out using any of the tools listed in the FSM. I made a drift from some steel tubing and threaded rod to seat the front crankshaft bearing. The rear bearing was a f-ucker but heated the carrier in an oven before pressing the bearing in. As others have said TDC and a 4" nail timed the balancer shaft.
