What causes this to happen when I do not have an EHM.

Arguing about whether the glass is half full or half empty misses the point: the bartender cheated you.

All seals will wear out and leak eventually.
The question is:
Are you sure its the rear main seal and not something else leaking?

Its much more common for the turbo oil drain tube to be leaking.

Well, I haven't seen it myself. The dealer is replacing the TC under recall and spotted this. Quoted an up-charge of $235 since the trans is already out. I do know the tech that is working on it is pretty sharp, so I have a little confidence that this problem exists.

I'm wondering if there is another reason other than some just fail. OK, I will pose this question. If the CCV puck was plugged would this possibly be a cause? I don't think it has ever been changed.

Yes, if anything has plugged the CCV, that would cause the rear main to leak. It may not be
the CCV puck itself. It could be in the hose that leads to the turbo-intake hose.

How many miles are on your engine?
If I already had the transmission out, I would change the rear main too.

I suspect my rear main is leaking too, but its not bad enough for me to go through the
trouble of dropping the tranny.
