About to do a swap....

So I am currently trying to put a list of things needed for doing a motor swap here shortly. I actually have an 02 liberty. It has the pos 3.7L motor with a rod knock and lifter tick. Also, the transmission is leaking fluid out the front like no ones business...... I just recently acquired an 05 liberty CRD that was totaled. So I figured I would do a swap. Now I assume the body and uni-frame structures are the same. So Hopefully this won't be too hard to do. I will also have both jeeps side by side while I do it, which should help immensely. I already know I need to order a new suncoast torque converter, Provent filter, and green diesel tune.

Anybody have any other suggestions? I have read the Noob CRD guide.

Also, If anyone has any spare CRD specific parts, I know I'm going to need a Radiator (unless its the same as my 3.7 radiator), and an intercooler....

Also, I do plan on doing a wright up on the progress once I get started.

You will need to swap the front axle and suspension as well. Hopefully its in good shape.

Yea, I plan to swap the motor, computer (electronics), Trans and transfer, and axles. In fact if need be, I'll swap everything except the body and interior.

How many miles are on the donor crd. Might be close or need a timing belt job. Also another thing I'd add is an in tank lift pump

the donor has just under 65,000 miles. I did also plan on doing the timing belt. Here is the list I've put together so far.

New air filter..... maybe some sort of Hi flow air filter if I can find one.
Oil and Oil filter change using the Mobil M1-301 filter.
Fuel filter..... Napa FIL 3647
Install Dodge Ram Diesel in-tank fuel pump
Replace Boost Hoses
Clean MAP sensor
Unplug MAF Sensor
New Suncoast Torque Converter
Green Diesel Eco Tune
Replace Timing belt Kit
Add Provent filter.
New Thermostat

Anything else?????? I just want to do everything now, so I have a problem free 100k.

Change out your glow plugs and/or the new system and controller while it is easy. GET RID OF THE FACTORY CERAMICS!

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=78238 (I changed out my first FCV around 90,000 miles.) The factory setup is awful and is prone to boost leaks. I am really happy to see this kit!

If it was me, and the engine was out sitting on a stand, I would also pull the intake and have it tanked. The amount of soot from the EGR mixed with oil from the turbo is an insane mess.

I owned mine since new (April '06) and replaced the following:

FCV 90,000
Intake Tubes 135,000
Timing belt 105,000
Passenger wheel hub 125,000
Driver wheel hub 165,000
In tank lift pump mod 170,000
Updated fuel head 150,000
Updated fuel head failed and replaced again at 170,000
Glow Plugs 170,000
EGR Valve 170,000
U-joints 170,000
Shocks 165,000
Brakes every 65,000
Tires every 40,000
Fluids as scheduled except oil every 5,000

I am getting the intake kit and GDE tune this summer. Overall, not too bad for the miles. The wost part so far is the glow plugs. What a PITA! My #1 plug tip broke off in the engine and passed; I was one of the lucky few.

Sounds like you have a good start.

mtnmed71 is right, the EGR and FCV are very problematic on these engines.

Beyond that, you might consider replacing your glow plugs. OE ones were 7V ceramic but they are no longer being made. They work great, but when they fail it is possible for the tips to crack off and drop inside the cylinder. The replacements are 5V steel plugs (Bosch) which also requires a new glow plug module and these work just okay, but those of us in cold climates are left "in the cold." The other option is the drop-in 7V steel plugs made by a company called Etecno, which do not need a new GP module...but I would have to say I have seen a lot of threads about these failing prematurely lately.

In any case, there are only a few U.S. vendors out there that cater to our unique needs and they would be Green Diesel Engineering, IDParts, as well as myself. Oh, and geordi, the traveling mechanic. All are forum members here.
