I have been trying to track done a clanking noise and I think I found it. What could cause this? The noise changes when I rotate the shaft by holding it, it is like the noise is integral to the shaft

Link to recording comes up as "private" so I cannot view it. If you mean drive shaft I'd guess "U" joints are shot and they are notorious for being impossible to diagnose without dropping the drive shaft. If front wheel drive shafts probably the CV joint - note that the gasser and CRD ones are not interchangeable.

Try the video now. This is the front drive shaft, from the transmission to the front differential.

One thing that I did not mention is the wiggling of the shaft is due to the passenger tire being jacked up. I will have to check the boot, I did not look at the front one.

We can hear this noise when driving the jeep, especially when you hit a small bump in the road.

Looks like the CV joint was bad, but not what was causing the noise. Check out my post in the drive line noise thread

Thanks, guys, this has been a helpful discussion. My wife's CRD is doing the same thing and I've just crawled out from under it, confirming that the slop/clunking is at the rear of the front driveshaft. Of course, it has to be checked with one front wheel lifted.

The low speed sounds are a perfect match for our symptoms.

So my jeep is making a noise.
I can only hear it when the windows are rolled down and a wall or passing car reflects the sound back to me.
I'm pretty sure its on the drivers side.

It sounds like someone is lightly jingling their keys. (best way I can describe it)

What do you think? Front driveshaft CV joint?

I crawled underneath to check the shaft. Shaft seems tight with only a small amount of play.
But when inspecting the boot on the front driveshaft CV joint...

... I found NO BOOT. :?: :?: :banghead:
