Replaced the thermostat 120,000 miles ago, so it was sorta due, I suppose, especially since rumor has it they only work for 50 or 60,000 miles anyway. Went to tow the TT today, and climbed the first hill, no problem, went up the second hill, no problem, but going down the back side of that hill, the temp gauge started climbing, and climbing, and climbing. Usually cools right down under trailing throttle down the back of the a hill, but nooooooo, went all the way up to the gauge pin at "H" on me, and then it wouldn't cool down. Coasted slowly to a stop, still pinned, sat and idled for a few, still pinned. Gauge just would not go down.

Finally turned on the heater full blast, and sitting there baking, the gauge finally went down. Shut it off, let it cool down for a half hour, made sure the overflow tank was full, and tried to drive off slowly, only to have it shoot up again, and blow off a bunch of coolant. Refilled, limped into an RV dealer and dropped the trailer. Drove it home slowly, and observed that with the heater on, it would run a bit warm going uphill, and a bit cold going downhill, but didn't blow off any more coolant.

So much for our camping trip this weekend.

I hope we didn't kill the head gasket and crack the head. No evidence of bubbling in the overflow tank, so maybe we're lucky this time.

That sucks man. I hope it didn't do any damage. My thermostat is starting to fail again after 40K. Mine is failing open so it isn't staying at operating temp. Have you checked your fan clutch to make sure it is engaging?
