Hi All
I'm new to the site and hope someone can help with a problem I have with a 2007 Cherokee 2.8 CRD over here in the UK. It is fitted with the Italian diesel engine and Auto Transmission and is standard with no mods.

It developed a knocking noise which from outside sounds like a main bearing knock on the crank, but on closer inspection under the hood, the noise is coming from the top of the engine. It starts up fine, does not smoke out the back, but although it is running on all cylinders it is down on power by about 40%.

There are no engine management lights on the dashboard.

i would be grateful for any idea's what could be the cause of this problem and any fixes that could be suggested.

Thanks and have a great day

Rooster

You have a rocker/ valve issue. Any more running will make the problem worse.

Certainly could be rockers. Before assuming so what's the mileage on the vehicle and has the timing belt ever been changed, if so when?

MAYBE.

Taking the top apart to check the rockers is easier than pulling the whole motor, so I would suggest doing that first anyway. HOWEVER, what you describe sounds suspiciously like my second motor that failed by stuffing the #4 rod through the side of the block after the rod cap left its assigned duty station. I do not know if the bolt backed out due to the main bearing failing, or if the bolt loss was the leading cause and the bearing simply fell into the oil pan with the rod end.

But the noise sounded like it was coming from the top of the motor, and I suspected the #3 cylinder as having either rocker noise or a funky injector. Neither theory panned out and I was at a loss until the engine stalled while idling because it had stuffed the rod.

Just be prepared for the eventuality of pulling the whole block. Any parts you may need can be sourced locally through VMspecialist.co.uk - George is a nice guy that I spoke with a while back.

Could it be a broken glow plug or tip and what he hears is the piston beating it up against the head?
Can a GP break without setting a DTC?

Maybe and Maybe.

I'd think that a broken tip wouldn't be a consistent sound however, more random like a rock in a blender. At the same time, one or two good hits, and there wouldn't be enough of it left to make ANY noise, but that isn't to say that the rest of the cylinder would be terribly happy about having ceramic shrapnel whisking around the edges and polishing things.

Bit suspicious that the problem appeared so soon after the belt change...maybe the workshop did not tighten up everything properly!

Be prepared to take it back to the workshop so that they can carry the cost of any damage caused! :(

The odds are overwhelmingly in favor of the shop that just did the TB being responsible. However, this will undoubtedly be an expensive proposition to correct, so it will put the ethics of the shop to the test. If you have not already informed them by phone, I would call the VM Specialist and see if the shop is known to them. They may be able to suggest a shop you could TOW it to first, to verify what is wrong. If you just tow it back to the shop that did the work and they claim it is something unrelated to what they did, you will be in a difficult position.

So sorry this has happened to you and be sure not to run it ANY more in this state.
