My Daughters CRD (CRD#2) started leaking gear oil very badly from the drivers side rear wheel (lost about 3/4" of diff lube before I found it, and ruined the parking brake and disc pads).
It looks as if the steel part of seal simply rusted out

I glanced at mine, (CRD#1) just to check, and I now see that it is wet with gear lube also on the same side (drivers rear wheel).

I've had the same issue with mine but right now it is only the outer bearing grease that has come past the seal. I need to get it changed.

Do you drive in a lot of corrosive conditions (i.e. winter salt without rinsing or trips to the atlantic?) I had a shop replace bearings and seals at about 90k miles because they were "sure" a bearing was causing a noise...it wasn't. The bearings and seals were in really good shape, but then when it snows here, the city puts sand and fine gravel on the roads, not salt.

Yea, Alot of corrosive salt during the winter.
I keep the vehicle rinsed off whenever I return home, especially the alloy wheels.

That axle seal is under the hat brake drum, hard to keep that area flushed out.
