P1261 and P1265. Are these glow plug codes? 140k miles and my GPs have never been replaced. Engine runs great and starts up just fine. |

Yep #s 1 and 3. It's some $s but I'd consider getting a GDE tune if you have not already done so and then Weeks elbow kit (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=78238) which makes glow plug replacement a snap. However, if you have the original ceramic GPs and codes that's a good sign that the tip of 1 or both of those GPs could break soon, like any day. If so then the broken piece might pass out of the exhaust ok or it might beat a valve to death on the way out. Translation, I would not wait on replacing the dead GPs or drive much until you do. Has your timing belt job been done? If not you are way past the borrowed time limit. |

I've done everything you mentioned except the GDE tune. My biggest fear is that the glow plug will break when removing. Which places sell the Etecno plugs? |

Best price on those GPs is IdParts (http://idparts.com/catalog/index.php?cP ... b328261f52). I consider the GDE invaluable for a variety of reasons but if you don't want to get it right now you can just replace the GPs. The trick is to be sure to remove them straight out which means you are going to have to get everything out of the way and that includes the intake elbow. Do not under any circumstances even think about trying to partially remove the intake elbow and work the GP out around it. EXTREMELY bad idea as I well know. Since you have to get everything out of the way to do the GPs you really should consider putting all that stuff, except the intake elbow, in a box and replacing it with the kit I mentioned. There is no harm in doing so without the GDE tune but as Weeks notes it will light up your CEL all the time. Not harmful by itself but if another thing happens that would trigger a new CEL you won't know about it. As FL lacks emission inspections a CEL is harmless from that perspective. |

Thanks. I will check IDparts. Weeks kit has already been done. Maybe after I've done the GPs, motor mounts, and shocks I will think about the GDE tune. But it's not very high on my list of priorities. |

Great that you have already done Weeks kit. That makes GP replacement a snap comparatively speaking. |

I know there're a lot of threads to read about glow plugs, but thought I'd ask in this thread since it's new. My '06 also has the P1261 code, so I'd like to get a recommendation on glow plugs too. I've used IDParts for other items, so would probably use them again. I notice where they offer stock-type 7-volt and 5-volt steel types too. Can anybody provide some info about the "5v steel glow plug mod"? Thanks, Steve |

From the factory, our CRDs came with 7v ceramic glow plugs, which were later discontinued. You cannot buy them new anymore. So, now you have 2 options: The official replacement is the 5V Bosch Steel plugs, but you need your ECU reflahsed and the updated GP module: 5V Module: http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_ ... ts_id=2749 5V Plugs: http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_ ... ts_id=2858 The other option is to run the 7V Etecno steel plugs. No reflash or module needed. BUT these seem to have the highest failure rate and are the worst in colder climates compared to the 7V ceramic and 5V steel. 7V Plugs: http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_ ... ts_id=3816 |

Thanks for the info. Questions: 1. Where is the glow plug "module" located on our CRDs? 2. Is there an "official" name and/or number for the ECU reflash that's needed to use the 5v steel glow plugs? 3. Can this reflash only be accomplished at a Jeep dealer? Thanks, Steve |

The module is right behind the battery. It's a Bosch part. Keith at GDE should be able to do the re-flash for you. |

Glow plugs replaced. Weeks elbow intake installed at the same time (already has GDE Ecotune). Went 7V Etecno route to get back on road the fastest. Wee. No ECU codes |
