Hello all, I come to bring sad news...it appears my wife's liberty is dead.

It is a 2005 with 110,000 on the ticker. We had the timing belt serviced in August of this year as preventative maintenance. Also, an oil change and trans flush. After this was completed, the engine didnt seem to have the response it did prior, and from my crude bluetooth dongle and Torque app, it displayed only 19 psi boost. (~24 prior.)

She was getting on the freeway on a long entrance ramp, so she was not beatin on it, and then poof. Nuthin. I went to be the man who magically fixes things, and crank it over to get no firing. It sounded as if a cylinder was down on compression, but I wasnt sure on the side of the freeway. I had it towed home and fiddled with it a little to find nothing minor was wrong i.e. battery, fuel, oil, etc. While cranking during diagnosing it, it "stopped" rotating. I assumed the battery was just tired and to that note, so was I, so it went to the dealer.

They call me and tell me that what happened to the engine was not a result of their timing belt work(of course) and that to "further diagnose" it, they would need $800.00. Also, the technician claimed that 2 gallons of water came out of the oil drain plug.( no water when I checked dipstick.) I hung my head and hung up the phone. A few days later and $200 to the dealer for initial diagnostics, I had it towed back to my house. They left it apart (ok with me) so things were easier to see and get to. They removed the timing cover(and all parts needed to get cover off) and also, 3 of 4 injectors. Odd, I thought. I borrowed a cheap borescope from work and checked things out closer. Cyl 1, good. Cyl 2, good. Cyl 3, not good. Chewed up piston. No wonder they stopped at 3.

So here I sit, :5SHOTS: 1 tow left with AAA, and no real time to work on this thing myself. I live on the opposite side of the state (Michigan) from the diesel tech in Grand Rapids so he is kinda out of the question. I'm at a loss and was hoping someone could chime in with assistance. I know used engines are minimum $4000. I am unsure about rebuild. Please help, and if nothing else, the ole liberty might be for sale.

Did you complain to the dealer back in August when it didn't have any power after they serviced it?

Unfortunately no. I assumed it was due to the aftermarket intercooler hoses that I installed. It was down on power, but not enough to make a stink, and on top of that, my wife is the one who drove this daily and could tell. When I drove it, it seemed ok other than the boost. I never thought that the timing belt would have affected boost ( I know it can because of timing) because the dealer took care of it and I assumed :banghead: that they knew what they were doing.

I'm in the same boat. Exact year too.120k on the clock. Bought mine for 11k last year...My crd dropped valve cylinder 2. I'm still trying to get out its been 6 months and I'm still looking for options..

If it was down on power right after the timing belt change, it is because they screwed up the timing belt job. Simple fact.

I'm just guessing, and could be wrong, but it is possible that after changing the timing belt (incorrectly) they tried to start it and crashed the valves breaking the rockers. Of course, proving all that now is impossible.

I'm sorry to hear you are having this trouble and hope you can get your wife's ride back on the road soon.

No, if they had broken a valve or a rocker it would've been nearly undriveable immediately.

It sounds as if it's blown the head gasket and/or dropped a valve/glow plug into the cylinder.

The loss of power could've simply been the F37 mod or another "dealer tune" that they would've put on, showed as warranty or billed for in your bill, and not really even talked about it.

This isn't anything groundbreaking, I do empathize, but this has happened a few times already.

Please let us know if you decide to pull the head and see what the issue was.

Another possibility that doesn't require physical damage: they borked the timing by being one tooth off on either the intake or exhaust. One tooth late on the intake, and not enough air gets let in. Power down. One tooth early on the exhaust, power escapes too early, but boost would be much higher - potentially causing limp mode and overboost codes. One tooth early on the intake or one tooth late on the exhaust, power and cylinder pressures would be much higher.

The engine can operate safely with one tooth out on the cams... But not for long. When the belt starts wearing in, you will quickly reach the point where the piston and valve are meeting for a cup of coffee and a slice of calamity.

Well, we must remember that, because the cam gears/camshaft are not keyed, it could have even been less than one tooth. If the proper cam gear fixture was not used to maintain absolute position during removal and installation of the gears, then it is very possible that it may be off by a couple degrees. I'm not saying that it's necessary to remove the cam gears, but according to Chrysler's manual, a fixture is to be used if they are removed.

All told, I did get my hands on a cheap borescope and got a look into #3. It's not good. All beat up inside. Not sure if I can still do anything to prove it was their fault or not (and actually convince them to pay for it.) Or if this is my boat anchor. If nothing else, its a good roller, but I would love to have it repaired and Rollin coal again. Is it just impossible to find someone to work on it? I see there is a guy in grand rapids Michigan (100 miles away) that can do it, but that's a little far.

I really appreciate everyone's support, thank you. What a great group of guys. I truly believe that's what it's all about. Any insight into the dealer accusation process would be great. I'm not looking for a free lunch, just the honest service I'm looking for. If I messed up, I would surely fix it, as I know most people would. Thanks again fellas!

You can start with Chrysler Customer Care 800-247-9753.

It's a long process and you need to get past the first round of representatives. Ask for managers and support supervisors and explain your case. Continually repeat calls, asking for answers even when you are turned down 10 times.

Well, after some time and no luck with Chrysler, I have decided to sell the Liberty. I just don't have the time to work on it at this time, and really need my garage parking spot back since I live in a condo and they basically don't approve of parking outside of my garage.

So, I figured I would post here first to see if someone here wanted it. I am located in Milford, MI. I am obviously looking to get a little cash from it, but I also understand that it isn't worth much.

It has been in the garage ever since it came back from the dealer. It has a tick over 100k on it. Anyone interested?

Have about $15,000 into my 2006 that I bought for $1000. That includes a new Chrysler crate engine that comes with less than half of what they say it does. All the extras, Samco hoses, lift pump, Green tune, FS2500 bypass filter, new brakes, front hitch, EGR elbow kit and several other upgraded and new parts.

Just a reference figure for anybody else. Most all was parts. Pat let me off easy on the labor.

And I am still not done with it.

I think the FS2500 needs a couple of skid plates, Finish the heated seat upgrade. I'd like an electric fan. Something I will look into after I get things back together with the 2 piece shroud upgrade.

What did you pay for your long block? When mine dropped 2 valves, the best I found was $6800. I later found a long block that the Dealer in Las Vegas was selling for $5500, but with a $3500 core. I'm rebuilding mine now. $5500 is a deal compared to the time and money that I am going to spend.

IDparts sells the liners and pistons...

After that, it should just be a matter of basic wrenching. When you have extra air holes in the block, that is when you have real problems. But if the block is still solid... Then in theory, it should be able to be rebuilt. But I've never done that much on this motor, so I may be totally wrong.

I think it was $5200 or $5300. It did not come with what they said it would in the quote. Had to buy some extra stuff and some stuff they chipped in on.
