~100K miles

@ ~ 85K miles I did:

Head gasket
Valve-train
Timing belt (including all new idlers, new water pump, new thermostat)

Also:

GDE hot tune
Euro TC
New Trans pump
Hayden Fan Clutch
New Alternator (old one was good, but needed new pulley)

I'm going to take the old girl on a road trip, towing my ~5,000 lbs travel trailer, but before I do, I want to get everyone's opinion on this engine rattle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivp1CYr ... e=youtu.be

Only 3 things I could think of is the viscous heater, The High pressure pump, or that's pretty much normal.

Thoughts?

Am I missing something?

She runs like a top, pulls hard, getting great mileage, and it's been rattling for a long time, but taking it on a long road trip with the trailer makes me nervous.

I think flman is right, or you lost 20 bolts somewhere in the engine compartment, lol. Did you try to locate the place the sound comes from?

Here's my take on it.....

First replace the noisy and rusty alternator de-coupler.

Second: check your fan clutch for play and wear.

Third: it's possible that a loose motor mount can cause the engine to jerk upward.

Fourth, soot surrounding the lifters and rockers causing excessive noise.

Fifth, dirty injectors causing a rough running engine.

Good luck and report back with your findings because as much as we like to help you with our knowledge, we'd all like to know the cause for own knowledge base.

My :2cents:

check your harmonic balancer and torque convertor bolts if none of the above work for you. it sorta sounds like the decoupler on alternator but if the rubber goes bad on balancer it can be noisy

Alternator and pulley has less than 10k miles on it.

Tc and tc bolts have less than 5k miles on them as well.

Tc bolts have locktight

The valve train, including the lifters and rockers, has less than 20k miles on it.

Not sure if the motor mounts could cause a noise like that in park.....

Turbo?

That definitely didn't sound like an alternator pulley. It sounds more like a trashed bearing, but mounts are known to have similar noises. Put it in gear and see if the noise changes a bit. A mechanical sthetoscope may help locating the area

One of mine that had bad mounts sounded like the engine was grinding nuts. The CRD I bought new, needed a mount with less then 50K on the clock, they all seem to need these mounts a lot, so that is most likely part of the noise, if not all of the noise?
