Hi all, I've been getting a "bang" noise when I put the jeep in reverse. Also when going forward from park. I have 165,000miles but the previous owner replaced the tranny around 90,000. I have an eco tune if that matters. Thanks for any input. Bill

Bad u-joints can bang like that. Worth a look.

Motor mounts can also cause those symptoms. Or even the mount under the transmission crossmember.

Motor mounts and u joints Where done 10,000 miles ago. Also bangs when letting off gas and back on in city driving. Could it be torque converter?

Could be transmission mount. Get under the jeep while somebody puts it in reverse, and see if the mount is loose or cracked. Or if the bolts holding it are rusted and missing.

If they did the motor mounts, it's extremely possible that they missed the transmission mount. There is a quick workaround for a test that you can do to try. Get a couple of 2 inch rubber square furniture pads from Home Depot, they are about a half inch thick brown rubber. Jack up the transmission slightly and look for the space to open up in the mount just above the crossmember. Shove the pads in there, and let everything back down. See if the noise is gone. If it is, then the transmission is just banging on the crossmember because that mount has gone flat. You can either replace the entire amount, or just leave the rubber pads in there.
