Hi there. I'm new to the forum, and I'm really hoping someone can help me with some issues I'm having with my Jeep!
I bought a 05 Liberty Diesel back in May. I bought it with 123,000 on it and its up to 128,000 now ( Road trip to CO ). So far I love it, but its been having a lot of issues lately and I'm starting to wonder if its worth keeping.
About a month ago it started running really rough, and almost sounds like its missing. There's blue smoke sometimes, like if you're pulling out on the highway and have to get up to 60 fast. Then I tried to start it the other day and it started for a second and then died. Pushing the fuel pump primer gets it started again, but that only lasts about a week. It's done this 2 times so far. It was in the shop for over a week, and they had a hard time finding what was wrong. It coded up as a mass airflow leak and a camshaft sensor. They fixed the leak, replaced the camshaft, and then replaced the fuel filter when they still couldn't get it started. I got it back for 3 days and then it did the start up and die thing again. Pumping the fuel filter prime started up again, but now I'm wondering, is it even worth keeping if it's always gonna be in the shop?

Please let me know if you have any ideas on what might be wrong or what your opinions are of the Liberty Diesels.
Thank You!!

Hello.....welcome to LostJeeps. Did you replace just the filter or the entire filter head? If you have the first generation fuel head...that could be the problem.

Thank you :) I'm not sure what they did. I think they just replaced the filter itself. What would not replacing the fuel head cause?

Mine was doing the same thing it would loose power and stall when coming to a stop. The fuel filter primer head sucks in air and starves the engine for fuel. The part number for the fuel filter primer head is 68043089AA $80.53 if you have the first generation fuel filter head you will also need the wiring kit 68043086AB $11.70 I buy all of my jeep OEM parts from allmoparparts.com and VM engine and glowplug parts from IDparts.com I have spent countless hours of price comparisons that these two suppliers are the cheapest that I have found and they are very reputable dealers.

Has the timing belt been changed?

A lift pump and upgraded fuel filter head (racor is my choice) should be tried and if that doesn't work, consider that timing belt was never replaced or not done correctly.

I ran into a guy the other day who has 140k on his original CRD. I told him I wouldn't even risk driving it home without a new belt!

Thank you all. I'm calling the mechanic today to see if he looked at any of these when it was in the shop last week.

If you could get a list of fault codes it would be very helpful. You are in the mileage range where rocker arms can be a wear issue. Was the timing belt changed at 100,000miles?

I will add a caveat - after the troubleshooting

if you can do your own work- most of the problems aren't that hard

but if you're paying someone else to work on it - this can be a very expensive vehicle.

biggest problem from day one has been a lack of trained mechanics..

paying someone $100/hour to learn adds up.
