I cut open 3 oil filters to learn the differences between them. I will attach a picture of the elements later.
WIX 51516XP
Housing volume = 15 oz.
Element height = 3 - 5/8"
Element diameter = 2 - 3/4"
Element pleats = 33
Specifications Link - http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDe ... rt=51516XP

WIX 51515XP
Housing volume = 26 oz. Total oil capacity is increased to 6.75 quarts.
Element height = 3 - 15/16"
Element diameter = 3 - 1/4"
Element pleats = 41
Specifications Link - http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDe ... rt=51515XP

Cummins Fleetguard LF3487
Housing volume = 27 oz. Total oil capacity is increased to 6.775 quarts.
Element height = 4 - 3/16"
Element diameter = 3 - 7/16"
Element pleats = 52
Specifications Link - http://catalog.cumminsfiltration.com/ca ... tType=Lube

All three use rubber anti drain back valves, coil springs and synthetic filter media. I have attached a picture comparing the three below.

from Russ W. Knize article. wrote:
While there are dozens of oil filter brands out there, there are only a few actual manufacturers. Most filters you see on the shelf are sold by companies that don't actually make oil filters. The exceptions are Baldwin/Hastings, Champ, Donaldson, Purolator, and Dana/WIX. Those are actual manufacturers and you can be fairly certain of what is inside the can.

A very good article to read and study is "Oil Filters Revealed" by Russ W. Knize.

Make your own conclusions; there are several above average good filters out there. It is not as obvious as one would think!!
Based on some of the comparisons I have read and studied on the web, I have been using the Purolator One for the past several years. :2cents:

A while back I compared the Purolator P1 and the Mopar filter. Both are excellent choices (in the stock part numbers...) I posted the results and pictures on here somewhere...

Point of information:

Purolator is owned by MANN-FILTER, and a Purolatore PureOne is equivalent to the MANN-FILTER branded version.

True. However, I have seen differences in the Purolator and Pure 1 vs. the Mann part number for the same applications. Sometimes, however, there is a Mann filter in a Purolator box. Again, it depends on the application. The Volvo W917 Mann vs. the Purolator/P1 L/PL14670 is just one example. I have no issues with Purolator or Mann products. It is all that I use/sell.
