Hi all,

My name is Gareth and this is my first post.

I've recently bought a 2004 Jeep Cherokee (or KJ/Liberty) 2.8 CRD. This is the one with the 1st generation engine (fixed vane turbo). I live in South Africa so I assume it's safe to say it will be an export model/European model.

I've read the Noob guide and am trying to learn as much as possible about this car as I want to be able to give it the care it needs to keep going as long as possible, however it appears as though most of the information available is about the 2nd generation engines (2005 onwards).

For example; the EGR is said to be the root cause of 75% of problems, yet I have been told that my model doesn't have an EGR..yet on page 1 of the Noob guide Billwill wrote (with reference to his 2002 2.5 CRD) that it is easy to disable the EGR. :?

So now I don't know if my car has an EGR or not or if it has a MAF sensor... I'm still very new to this so can't (yet) just take everything apart to look at it.

I would really appreciate if someone could point out the key differences in the engines and what I should really be looking out for - for example what are the weaknesses of the 1st generation engines?

I have downloaded the 2003 KJ service manual and will be giving it a read - but a summary from someone who knows would be of great help to me.

Thank you very much!

Gareth

Oh one more thing: I've read about the GDE Eco Tune and contacted them and read many positive reviews so will definitely get it by year's end, but I'm just curious, does anyone have any thoughts as to why Jeep doesn't offer their own "different" tune options? If the Eco tune really is better, why doesn't Jeep just do it that way?

I dont know what your engine bay looks like, but on the 05-06 CRD you can see the EGR and EGR cooler mounted below the intake elbow(where the intake tract enters the intake manifold). See this picture:

It is the piece in the top right corner.

The advantages offered by the GDE tune are not offered direct from jeep due to restrictions imposed by the US government. If your jeep does not have an EGR then it is already in better shape than any of the United States versions here on the board from that perspective. This is one of the major reasons people here get the GDE tune.

Also, notice the black crud that is built up inside the intake elbow in the picture. That is caused by the EGR as well as the Crank case ventilation, CCV.

in your model the EGR is on the passenger side , some were I have see how to block the egr , plugging the vacuum out on the solenoid back to the filter housing , the only difference is the egr system and the turbo plus the electronic program in the ECU , this is what I know

Thanks for the replies - will see if I can figure it all out.

Easiest way to find the EGR: There will be a tube coming off the exhaust manifold, before the turbo. This smaller tube will go to the EGR valve. Then there will be another tube leading from the EGR valve to the intake - I don't know exactly how that is designed on your engine, but these two tubes are required to make it work. Thankfully, this engine doesn't have any internal passages for the exhaust gas, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

On my 2002 Export CRD also with fixed vane turbo there is a solenoid sitting on the RHS ie. your driver's side next to the air filter. It has a connector with two wires in it and two small rubber pipes attached for the vacuum. There is a small paper air-filter dangling down from this black plastic solenoid. I am pretty sure your model will be the same...if you pull the connector off of the solenoid you will get an engine CEL but you can pull off one of the rubber pipes without causing a CEL. Block the plastic nipple after pulling off the the pipe with a small self-tapping screw and put the pipe back over the screw head.
I doubt that you have the MAF sensor....there probably are no sensors/electrical plugs anywhere in the air-intake pipe area...if there is a MAP sensor there then you cannot disable the EGR in the manner I have described as the MAF sensor will detect that the EGR is not moving.

I assume you downloaded the 2003 KJ Service Manual from this link I am posting here...from Sams Noob guide. If you have not already downloaded the section "2.5_2.8 Export Diesel" then definitely do so as it covers our Export engines in great detail  :
