Machine ship finally got back to me. There are leaks in my cylinder head around one or two of the valve seats. Rather than spending time and money digging in to this to find out how bad it is, he said he'd rather start with a known good casting. Sheesh... ![]() So, does anyone know of a used engine with a good head on it sitting around somewhere waiting for attention? |

Or to redefine what that debt gets me: that head is about 1/4 what a crate motor would run? And heck, I already bought the ARP studs that I could install on the crate motor. But then my tranny would go kaput, or my rear axle would fall off, or something. So...I'm looking for cheap. |

Sheesh... ![]() So, does anyone know of a used engine with a good head on it sitting around somewhere waiting for attention? What kind of leaks? If it's basically normal valve job work, it should be pretty reasonable. Definitely better than buying another head (which will probably have the same issue). If it's straight without any cracks, I would let the shop do the work. It should be good as new at that point. If you still want a used head, http://vmdieselspecialist.com/ has them. They'll run you nearly $700, and take a couple of weeks to get here, but are in really good shape. I also have a head that has not been checked or cleaned up. It suffered some broken rockers, and possibly a head gasket leak. I can have a machine shop take a look at it, but I doubt it will be any better than the one you have. |

They are pulling the valve seats in the next day or so to see what is causing the leak. Coolant was leaking past the seat, it seems. When they pressure tested the head, bubbles came out from behind the seats. This also, I think, might explain why my coolant system didn't seem pressurized: if the leak was on the right side of the valve, it never would have seen cylinder pressure, just exhaust or boost pressure. But when the engine shut down, residual pressure could trickle it into the valve area and cylinder if the valve wasn't seating perfectly. |

Oh. Well the head I got from the VM Specialist was in GREAT shape, and it hadn't been completely thrashed by all the US model soot. I looked back at my records, and It looks like the grand total came in under $600 for the head, tax, and shipping. |

I have a cylinder head that has 1 trashed cylinder but the other 3 are intact, if you need parts like seats or guides and can't source them |

Thanks very much for the referrals, all! I do appreciate them. Gives me some hope that I might get this done without having to sell my guitars off. |
