I would like an accurate in cab thermometer like my 6.5s have. I would like to know what temp my CRD is running at just by looking at a temperature gauge.

Does anybody have any recommendations?

I hate the temperature gauges we currently use. I want to know the actual temperature

The temp gauge sending unit is on the back of the thermostat housing and it would be easy enough to install a "T" there to hook up an after market unit from say Glow Shift. Alternatively IIRC the sending unit does report actual coolant temp to the ECU and if so that may be something that can be read by certain smart phone apps via a unit attached to the plug under the steering column. However for free I would have suggested looking at what various needle positions mean on the GDE forum but apparently that post is gone.

Shoot me an email, not a PM, and I can send you a picture.

Yup.
The TorquePro app on my android tablet and the OBD-bluetooth adapter give me accurate temperature readings. Although any kind of OBD scan tool thingy will eventually cut-out or freeze up due to CRD specific communication errors.

I got my tablet used for about $50 and the OBD adapter for about $20 and the TorquePro app does a lot more than just give temperature readings.

Make sure you are using the correct Interface standard within torque. ISO 9141-2.

Also, I spent the money and bought the ScanTool OBDLink LX which is supposed to be the best one out there and is the one that the Torque app developer recommends. I think they are only $60 on amazon now. It helped eliminate the freezes, but it doesnt help with the data rate since that is an ECU/BUS issue, not a bluetooth dongle issue.

Has anyone been able to get transmission temperatures with Torque. Mine wont.

I'll keep track of this thread and hopefully I will hear something I understand. I have no blue teeth or green teeth either. My tech advancement quit with our flip phones.

Lol. That gauge probably costs more than the whole crd...

Search this section for Ultragauge. Others have used it with no problems so I have heard. I have one in my Sprinter with no temp gauge and that is the main reason I got it. Plugs into the OBD port, and detects your protocol and sensors.

Getting closer to working on this. Is there something small that I can mount someplace easily seen and leave plugged in 24/7?

Could you just drill and tap an NPT thermocouple into the thermostat housing? Omega engineering sells all that stuff so you could probably throw something together pretty easily. It might even be possible to use a standard temperature gauge from glowshift or something if you could find out the type of thermocouple they use. Typically thermocouples are identified by a letter like K, T, S, etc. Each one works better for certain temperature ranges due to the metals they use for the wiring.

If he goes the after market gauge route there is probably no need to drill and tap. Just unscrew the existing OEM temp sending unit from the back of the tstat housing; install a "T"; reinstall OEM unit and add the after market one

How does the OEM temperature gauge work? Is it controlled by the computer? Is it connected directly to the sending unit?

If it is controlled by the sending unit and reads accurately, could somebody make a graduated overlay for it so you could tell what temperature you are actually running?

Thanks

I like the idea of only having to install a T. I have a bunch going on and haven't made it back to this project. Getting some help from Sasquatch.

Ummmmmm.............hate to be a stick-in-the-mud, here, but mama ECM has need of the Engine Coolant Temperature sender at all levels of engine management - remember those margarine vs butter commercials, where 'It's not nice to fool with mother nature!' - the revelations of St. John the devine would be as nothing, compared to the troubles you'll find yourself in if caught disabling the ECT sensor - you'd do much better to just wet your finger and stick it out the window, eh................

A "T" could work, but the further out of\away from the coolant the sensor is mounted, the more inaccurate the signal to the ECM - "T"'s can get a permanent air bubble which reduces the wet coolant on the bulb, with corresponding reduced response due to vast difference in air-bubble density and liquid coolant density

I am finally getting ready to install my ECT sensor for an aftermarket guage and have a question on location.
Forget about ease of installation, I doesn't matter to me. Only going to be doing it once.
Where would one get the most accurate and useful ECT data?

1. At the thermostat housing.

OR

2. Directly from one of the threaded ports in the block into the coolant galley.

Both have their pros and cons, so I wanted to see what those of you that know this engine better than I do had to say.

Thanks in advance.

At full load pulling a trailer with t-stat fully open, the temp differential from coolant in from radiator and out of t-stat is about 5 C. The t-stat is the hottest location.

Ok I'll try one last time. You have a temperature gauge in the dash from the factory all that's missing is the degree markings but a translation of the markings to degrees can be viewed at http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/papai ... sort=3&o=0 . I'd post an image directly but...Image PS obviously I figured it out but like so many things "how to" was/is not complete. To post open PhotoBucket; select AND open the image you want to link; under the SHARE LINKS heading (right side of screen) left click on the IMG link box to copy the link; paste that link into your post (do NOT use the Img tab in the Forum - that apparently double brackets the Img link and makes it not work)

If you just have to have a gauge with degree markings I'd still recommend a "T" off the back of the thermostat housing so you can have the OEM sensor and a second sensor.

To post that pic, click on selected IMG url in photobucket site, will go yellow and say COPIED, then rite-click here, select post image and click, and the pic will show up in ur post - I think............

GDE, thanks for the info. That's what I was looking for.
I like redundancy, and I like my Isspro Performax gauges.
So far I have learned alot about the working parameters of this engine just by watching the gauges.
What it does (the computer), and when.

papaindigo- I hear what you are saying. The temps can be extrapulated from the OEM guage.

Jeff Bauer and I are presently working on seeing if we can't add a port to his new T-Stat housing so that an aftermarket sensor can be installed.
I agree with Kieth that this would probably be the best place if one were looking for the hottest location.
