Can you successfully swap ECM's on 2005-06 CRD without any re-programming?

I believe the answer is no. I think it needs your VIN programmed into it or you will not be able to start the jeep.

Reflash is absolutely necessary to program replacement ECM with your VIN and Injector serial numbers, as installed in your engine - these serial numbers can be seen as a bar code label on the front left side (as you're looking at it) of the black steel timing cover plate - can also be found with a pre-scan of your original ECM - which would prolly be way more significant if any injector(s) had been replaced during service procedures...........................

What other modules or components need to be swapped over to allow operation without a reflash? i assume the security system has something to do with it. May be faced with an engine swap from the 05 to the 06 if I cannot make the 05 work with electronic parts swaps. May have to buy a wrecked 05CRD to get compatible parts since they seem to use a different bus system. Anyone else crazy enough to contemplate the electrical swaps in preference to the engine swap?

John

Hi Stan and Ollie.
I play around with cars, usually accident damaged ones. Occasionally they have other problems too. The 05 CRD has been repaired and is ready to go on the road. The check engine light is on, code P0105- Inlet sensor signal plausibility. Harness, supply voltage, and ground connections are all ok but sensor only reads 3.78V on the signal return with key on, engine off. I would expect around 4.7V. Unable to read voltage from barometric pressure sensor in the ECM which would help a lot. I have three inlet pressure sensors, a new one and two used ones. All perform the same voltage wise when you pressurize them or draw a partial vacuum on them. So I assume the sensors are ok and the fault is in the ECM, possibly the barometric pressure sensor or associated circuitry. Test instructions on page 9-764 06 KJ repair manual seem totally crazy to me.
I have an 06 KJ CRD that needs an engine, so there is the possibility of some swap either way.

Have you tried resetting the P0105 DTC (with the DRBIII) to clear it, then see if it reoccurs - this can be resulted from something as simple as a severely dirty air filter - some DTC's do not reset and go to archives when problem is resolved

Hi gmctd.
Have reset it many times, but it resets after a short time. Will not reset if you hold the idle around 900rpm. A condition of setting the code is that engine speed is below 800 rpm. Air cleaner is clean. Still happens if you take filter out. Takes about 15 seconds to reset with atmospheric pressure present on the sensor. If you vary the pressure a lot either side of atmospheric, the code sets almost as soon as it is cleared with the engine idling.

Any chance that connector\cable was damaged in the accident - pinched\severed with only 1 or 2 strands of wire still intact? Or possibly currently pinched between other engine components between the engine and firewall?

How about the large connectors at the ECM? Unlatch, unplug and reseat both connectors there - or, if wreck was bad enuff to shatter the battery, perhaps batt acid has seeped into some of the connectors

All connectors ok, clean and no damage. No damage in engine bay. Resistance of the three wires is zero. however that is with just the voltmeter current flowing. Will check further to see if wires are somehow damaged and unable to carry operating current without voltage drop because of reduced strands available to carry current. Sensor end connectors have all been backprobed and are ok. 5V supply from ECM seems ok with sensor in circuit. Wiull post results of inspection tomorrow.
