Post subject:  How do you tell if your CRD ecm is flashed already??

Hello, been reading alot here since my recent purchase of an 2006 crd liberty 99k miles.
It has had sevice records that lots been done over the years to it.

It is running an k& n air filter, and has the fuel heater unplugged.
Lots of other dealer servicehas been done including the tcm were it shifts down
at 63 miles an hour to overdive to lower rpm. (t37)

However belive it was tuned due to getting over 33.4 mpg on highway cruising 75mph
and combined city with little hwy of 27.3.

Is there a way to see if a flash was done with basic code reader have one that does live data while running.

Thank you great forum by the way.

Comments:
1. get rid of K&M filter as they are known to do a poorer job of filtering than a stock good quality paper filter
2. if the fuel heater element is unplugged and if it's smaller than the adjacent element plug then stick a "Q" tip in the hole while pumping the primer. If no diesel smell you are ok (e.g. have a 1s gen filter head but no leak). If diesel smell you are not ok (same head with leak) so replace with 2 gen head and new heater element pig tail. If element is essentially the same width as other element you have 2 gen head and can plug heater in if the wiring has a bright blue plug - if not bright blue get pigtail. See fuel head bleeding video in Sir Sam's NOOB guide for PNs and pictures.
3. at 99K miles has the timing belt job been done? If not do ASAP as in right now.
4. no you cannot tell if you have a special ECU flash with a basic code reader. The final shift at 63mph is because of the F-37 ECU and TCM flash. It's possible you have a GDE ECU flash which improves hwy mpg but doesn't change, IIRC, that shift point. Best way to tell is email Keith at GDE your VIN number and ask. If your reported mpg is based on the EVIC calculation that's notorious for being way high when compared to GPS mileage correct and hand calculation.
5. very bad idea to use basic code reader to collect data while running. While some bluetooth/Android pairs work basic code readers are well known for causing the KJs computers to go nuts and shut things down in mid flight so to speak.

Thank you for the quick answers.

Working on parts list for timing belt change already.
Will check into air filter replacment
Belive the plug for fuel heater is same size or larger and with water tight seal think its blue will have to check on it. Getting old memory failing.
Milage figured out using math, but very close to digital read out. within .5 mpg or closer.

FYI- if you have any of the GDE tunes the rpm will spike up to about 1000 rpm just for a second on startup.

stock doesn't do that.

don't know about inmotion.

the tuner boxes will have a plugs into the intake - fuel and air pressure sensors.

The best place to find a timing belt kit is at ID parts. I emailed you the link. The kit is complete with all idlers etc.. Easy because they assembled all the parts you need into a kit for $399. The kit worked great for me- good quality.

Update on test:

1: tested the fuel heater for leaks in electrictal connection point no smell or leaks.
It has the larger plug and is bright blue so plugged it in.

2: Mis spoke eailer about air filter it has an Advance Flow Engineering inc cleanable air filter installed.

3: upon start up the tach does jump to 1000 rpm for a moment then goes back down to 750 rpm ( so hopefully this means gde flash already)

4: it does have the f37 :( flash done from dealer found the sticker stating so.

5: ordering timing belt kit

6: did not find any tune boxes plugged in under the cover or on anywhere in engine compartment.

7: Just talked with Keith ( great person to talk with) at GDE and this Jeep CRD does have his eco tune installed in May of 2010.... so happy :) :)

Thank you, Layback

Your mileage sounds about similar to what I get with the GDE hot tune and AFE filter(like yours). I dont think that the filter does a whole lot. I never noticed any measurable gains in HP or MPG's but who knows.

IIRC if you have speed control it came stock limited to ~85mph, the GDE tune removes this limit.

You can also check the oil. In the absence of the GDE tune it will be jet black after a few hundred miles.

Question on gde eco tune
1- do i need to do anything to the maf or egr to disconnect it or is it done all in the software.

2- anything else does the gde eco tune does that is not listed in there basic discription?

Thanks, Layback

Answers and comments:
1. yes there is an rpm "flair" with the GDE Ecotune but to be really sure if you have it you need to run your VIN by Keith at GDE'
2. question 1 - all done by software. Once flashed the EGR is only minimally functional, if fact if you want Keith says you can redirect the coolant hoses that go to the EGR so no coolant flows to it. I think the MAF stays plugged in but the sensor on the side of the air filter box can be unplugged but best ask Keith.
3. question 2 - their basic description pretty much covers it. Most but not all report mpg gains of 10-20% in town and on highway and much cleaner oil.

If you disconnect the maf I dont believe you will get a check-engine-light. However, I have a problem with my MAF(or the associate circuitry) and I do get a code when i scan my ECU but it does not set off the light. It did on the stock tune. So I guess that is one other thing you could check. Unplug the maf and see if you get a light.

Unplugging the MAF (sensor on top of air filter box out let) is a cheap and easy way to disable the EGR valve, without the other benefits of a GDE tune, but it will trigger a CEL. It's my understanding, for those of you subject to inspections, that the CEL and code will go away after several drive cycles if the MAF is plugged back in.

The GDE tune renders any readings from the MAF meaningless hence no CEL.

Thats not entirely true though. There is still an underlying code related to a faulty maf sensor with the GDE tune as far as I can tell. My CEL stays off but I can scan and clear codes as many times as I want and the Code keeps coming back everytime I start it. I emailed Keith about this at one point and he confirmed this.

I dont know if this will show up on an inspection, I will find out here in the next few days.

Odd. Both my son and I have had GDE tunes for quite some time and the only code that pulls up, using the GDE tool, is the one for the viscous heater because the relay is unplugged. That said our MAF sensors were good when we got the tune and, presumably, while not unplugged are still good.

You get a code for the viscous heater? Does it make the CEL come on?
I have a stock f37 tune. My heater relay has been unplugged for years and never a code.

I get a code b10b3 for the viscous heater using gde scan tool.

If you have pulled the viscous heater relay, I have because it's useless here in N. FL, the ECU will throw a code that can be read with a scanner but it will not turn on the CEL.

PS I assume the code will go away after a few restarts if you plug the relay back in.

+1 to this, I can see the code with torque pro and no Cel on.

I have a very good scanner and code reader and my viscous heater relay has been removed for well over a year and I have never seen any DTC's present! :ROTFL:
Unplugging the relay should not cause an excessive current condition? Could you have some other problem causing the DTC??? Is it a P1102 code?

From my Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
Check Engine Codes list:
P1102 - Viscous/Cabin Heater Relay Circuit Condition
ECM has detected an excessive current condition on the Viscous/Cabin Heater Relay control circuit
Check Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
