So I have a strange problem, and I'm really hoping you guys can help me out.

I have a 2005 CRD with just over 140K on it (regular fluid and filter changes, new style fuel head, timing belt done at 110K, no real mods except a homemade pro-vent). On days when it is HOT here in FL (90+), I can start the jeep, drive it around, no issues, but after the jeep sits for about 10-15min, it won't start again until 30-60min have gone by.

Also, on any given day, before the jeep is fully warmed up, it might just shut off while decelerating or sitting at a light, and not start until it decides to start (no real time frame here, sometimes it's 15sec, sometimes it's 15min).

For the hot no start I came across this thread http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=80284 and thought I had found my answer. Until I did an injector return check when it wouldn't start one hot day, and they all showed the same 1/4-1/2in return while cranking. I didn't check the fuel pressure solenoid, but I figured if this was failing it would throw a code, right?

For the random shutting down before being fully warmed up I found this thread http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=80284 and it made me wonder if it could be the CPS and/or the ASD relay causing the random shutting down, and maybe even the no starting after it's sat for a bit when its hot outside.

I haven't checked the ASD relay to see if it is bad (I'll be doing that here soon) and I haven't pulled the CPS to test it with a multimeter and hairdryer yet either, just didn't have time for that this weekend.

I guess I'm just looking for some 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc opinions. TIA!

ASD relay could be part of it, buy 2 and replace them both of that type while you're in there.

Also you might want to consider changing out your Cam Position Sensor if you haven't done that already.

Also, if you don't regularly clean your MAP sensor, clean it and your MAF sensor.

Try those 3 things. Are you using a 1st or 2nd gen fuel head?

Sure sounds like a crankshaft sensor crapping out.

I don't think that a camshaft position sensor will stop an already running engine

Good luck with a quick diagnosis, let us know what you find.

I haven't cleaned the MAP or MAF sensors in a few years , they're due for a cleaning, but I wouldn't think they could shut me down or keep it from starting. I just tested the ASD relay, and it passed just fine.

I'm leaning towards the crankshaft sensor myself, not the camshaft sensor. I'll be checking that one next.

Yes crank sensor. Sounds exactly like your issue. Most easily accessed from BELOW the vehicle.

I'd say air in fuel, or broken rockers, maybe even TC shudder!!!

Seriously though, start digging around here for the fuel system diagnostic flowchart.

My bad, I forgot to mention that I have a low PSI inline fuel pump hooked up, right at the tank and I don't have any of those terrible plastic clips on my fuel lines anywhere. No air in the fuel.

I ordered and swapped out the crankshaft position sensor, as I feel that is what was plaguing the Jeep. But now I'd liked to test it, and I didn't see anywhere in the service manual on how to test it. If someone would be so kind as to tell me, that would be great.

Well I never got around to testing the crankshaft position sensor before my wife threw it in the recycling bin. But the new one has been in the Jeep for just over a week now and it hasn't stalled out on me, or even tried to, and it hasn't had any "hot no start" issues either.

I'd say my problem is solved, and as always I'm very grateful for the resource that is this awesome forum.
