I'm tired of my shifter not working right because a former owner screwed it up. As I piece the history together, it appears they wanted the shifter to be free floating so they could put it in neutral for towing without a key.
As a result, you can turn the engine off and take the key out while still in gear. Thankfully, you still can't turn it on in gear but you can go out of park without a foot on the brake...
I took the console apart once and got all the interlocks to work for one cycle then everything went wonky again.
So I'm thinking I need the shifter housing. Anyone know which one? Of course as I post this I finally realized what RHD means... Looks like 52109779AC is my part unless anyone else has ideas.

Sounds like they cut the shifter interlock cable because they stick and you can't remove the key. That's only should be done if you don't have kids. BTW flat towing a Jeep is with the transmission in park and transfer case in neutral. So the wheels will turn around corners the key must be in the ignition and one click off the steering lock but ignition off. I use a dummy key (no chip) in mine.

Off-Topic, but does flat towing like that with the key in affect the odometer?

OP claimed that PO messed up the shifter to flat tow. You don't have to mod the ignition or shifter to flat tow. Flat towing with dummy key one click turn does not turn the ignition on so won't run battery down or count the miles. You could use original key but then someone could steal your Jeep at a rest stop.
