Post subject: | Glow Plug Indicator Light |
All, Have had my 2006 CRD for about a year now. Have gotten lots of great information from this site and am getting it in shape for the upcoming South Dakota winter. I have a Glow Plug Indicator Light question. I have NEVER seen my light come on, last winter the Jeep was routinely outside in sub-zero weather (coldest probably -15F). It has always started without any problems, but it seems strange that I have never seen the light. Is this normal? Is it possible that the bulb is simply out? Should I be concerned or just ignore since it has routinely started even in very cold weather? Thanks for any insights you can give. Dan |

It only comes on for a few seconds. When you turn the key on. |

It comes on (looks like a little curled wire) for about 1 second in most conditions, but the plugs ARE working - there is a pre-glow (that the light is for) and then a post-startup glow period that may be as long as 30 seconds or so. It is possible that your temperature sensor is bad and incorrectly reporting the outside temps to the computer, but you would see harder starting in that scenario. If the engine is starting up easily, don't worry about it. The main function of the glow plug light is a "Wait to start" light. If you aren't seeing it... You don't need to wait to start, so get up and go! |

Yes the light does not stay on for long although the ECU is actually doing quit a few things behind the scenes...pulsing the plugs etc. You should be able to check that the bulb is OK by holding in the Odometer Trip Reset button while switching the ignition ON. This excercises all the lamps and the gauges so you should see this little curled wire motif coming on. ![]() |
