I am experiencing a new head gasket leak.

This will be my third time on 2 separate Jeep Liberty CRD's and I am looking for ARP studs.

If any of you have done the ARP stud modification and have the two left over studs from the set, then contact me and let know what you want for them.

Thanks

Racer

I managed to scrounge up a set of 8 here, and now I need to buy a box of ten. If I had to do it over again I would just buy the 20 and offer the 2 extras on this site. Lucky I was not in a big rush to get them.

I was wondering about your thoughts on that hunt FLman - I'm in total agreement, it is better to just buy the kit (now available from IDparts) and be done with it.

It sucks for sure, but at least the whole thing will be over in one go. Racer is certainly under a bit of a time crunch anyway, these things don't heal themselves. The bleeding just gets worse as time goes on.

The crd is parked and won't be driven until fixed. Seaking alternate means of transportation while being repaired.

I may do it myself, I have a hunch that I may have caught the leak early enough to not replace th HG. So just the studs and take my chances.

Ehhh.... just drive it, my wife is driving hers, I have not heard a report yet about a CRD causing additional damage from HG leak? I have a head on order, and I will most likely not be tearing into it until I get some leisure time.

I was considering using the bolts that come with the HG on hers, but I might just buy a box of 10 and do ARP this time.

Not sure. The forensics on mine are difficult. I definitely had a crack in the cylinder head that was caused by something, and I haven't overheated it. I also have evidence that coolant was wandering around between the leaves of the gasket I removed. I know my engine partially hydrolocked to some degree the last time I tried starting it. So one theory is that coolant under pressure was sneaking into the cylinder past a bad gasket seal, and that the partial hydrolock domed the head enough to crack it under the valve seats.

...or it could be that the cracks were caused by an overboost condition I had a few months ago when I had to take my turbo apart. In either case, coolant getting into the cylinder is not a good thing. If it's only going the other way (gasses pressurizing the coolant), then you might be okay. But when the white smoke comes...stop driving.

The vast majority of the head gasket issues I have seen have all been the 'losing coolant via the outflow tube' type, rather than the 'leaking back into the cylinder and hydrolocking' type.

I would agree that you can probably keep driving it, and there are certainly a large contingent of CRDs out there that have very minor pressurization leaks that maybe the owners don't even know about. The pressure in the cylinders JUST from air compression is something like 500psi, and that is before the combustion event happens, and at zero boost. At full boost and with combustion... Now you start to see why the head studs need to apply up to 19,000 psi of compressive strength to hold it down!

The point being - the gasses are WAY over the 18psi that the water system is allowed via the radiator cap. It is much more likely that the pressure will be FROM the cylinder, and not the other way. When the engine is shut down, the water pressure wouldn't normally be anywhere near sufficient to work its way back into the cylinder.

I'm sure you will be able to drive it until I can get up there and fix it. Don't waste your money on a rental car, just monitor the situation and drive on. If you really want to limit any potential water loss, leave the radiator cap at the loose-but-not-open setting, and pressure will just bleed to atmosphere instead of pushing the water out. The weather is getting to the point that you won't need the cooling capacity anyway!

I think I had some of that, too...or losing it somewhere. On pressure testing the system after my little hydrolock incident, I found a leak in the radiator. That might have been caused by the leaky head gasket...I don't know. Seems like the cap should have let go instead, as it tested at 13psi release. But it struck me as pretty coincidental.

Sounds like a huge coincidence to me, the pressure should have launched the radiator cap through the hood before the radiator would have been damaged.

You should be glad it keeps it at the top.

So are you going to dig in and do this job yourself this time, or sub it out?

Just buy 20 and sell the 4 extra. You are going to be waiting a long time, cause I recently bought all the spares.
