The mini Sears in town doesn't have batteries and the guy who owns it is a scum bag, so I bought an Interstate. My friends at a local diesel shop found that the batteries sized for a Chevy Duramax will fit these Jeeps. I bought a Mega-Tron Plus (interstates advertised Cold Weather Battery) with a 3 year free replacement warranty and a 6 year prorated for $155. It's got 1000CA and 800CCA. My Dad and I have run Interstates in our Cherokees for years and they work great in my cummins. They are a good reliable battery for Northern Nevada and an inline 6, so I have faith that it will be good for this engine.

So, reading in the TDI forums, the thinking there is that for a diesel, CCA is not everything and that the Ah/RC of a battery for a diesel is also very important. Most batteries don't list Ah, but most are way lower than my 80Ah in my TDI. If anyone wants a ton of reading, here you go: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=58342. Any thoughts on this? The summary seems to be that while CCA is important for the cold, if you don't also have high Ah/RC, you simply won't get that long of a life out of a battery. [OEM VW batteries have been known to go to 5-8 years in some cars, without any care. They are also lead acid and serviceable once you take the silly stickers off.]

As far as for the CRD, I've been dizzy trying to figure out what to look for. After reading all the TDIclub stuff about the importance of ampere-hours and reserve capacity, I'm not seeing any mention of that here. Thinking on this forum is an AGM 34 is best, top of the line being Sears/Odyssey, but that any 34 will work for a while at least.

Anyway, It hurts to pay this much for batteries, but here's what I'm thinking at the moment:

So, should I walk into a Sears and buy this Platinum one (which I assume is the replacement for the P-1 which is no longer offered) for $250+ taxes (almost 10% here in CA): http://www.sears.com/diehard-platinum-a ... 851090000P

Or just get this Odyssey 34R online with free shipping and no tax for $257 (is there danger in getting it shipped?): http://4x4bumperstore.com/i-12793687-od ... inals.html

Here is a helpful explanation, that might point to some of the differences between TDI starters and voltage requirements and the CRD?

The Platinum P4 is the exact same battery as the P1 but with added side terminals so it's a group 34/78 battery while the P1 is a group 34 only battery.Group 34 has top posts while group 78 has side post but the same battery dimensions.

The P1 is the same battery as your 2nd link while the PC1500DT is the same battery as your 1st link.

Just bought this, best price I could find: http://autoplicity.com/2139538-odyssey- ... al-battery

Free shipping, no tax, 2% off code from retailmenot.com = $226.27

EDIT: For some reason, the identical 34R battery with the same specs is $24 more and no free shipping, while the "heavy duty commercial" version has the deal on it with free shipping. http://autoplicity.com/search?searchterms=odyssey+34R
