NO GDE tune installed, but need help to verify!

emailed Keith with my vin, and he confirmed my 2006 is NOT tuned with his product.. I told him this thing runs so good, I was just making sure before I bought his tune that someone else's tune or modules are installed. Maybe the dang thing runs so good as 'stock' I am fooled!!! (it is pretty zippy)
He told me to 'visually' inspect the MAP and rail pressure sensor for a 'chip'. Would this be a 'go between' type module on these plug ins?

If it is a "cheater chip" then yes, there would be another module connected to the MAP sensor and fuel pressure sensors, and some in-line connectors as well to pass the altered information back to the computer.

Remove this if you find it.

You might also have a tune from a competitor, I believe Malone Tuning may have also developed a CRD tune, but they are much less popular than Keith's GDE tunes.

Yes, Malone and Rocketchip (both popular VW TDI tuners) have also developed tunes for the CRD, apparently.

rancherman - at ca. 8 years old I'd recommend putting a timing belt job at the top of the list based solely on age. FYI that hex head oil pan plug is OEM, be sure when you change the oil that it has the proper washer installed.

They are quite peppy bone stock. Keith's tune makes them a bit more peppy but IMHO the main benefits are better mpg and lots less soot in the intake stream.

So, what was 'stripping' out on the oil plugs, prompting the fumoto rage? I thought they were an allen head plug.. (original) and someone replaced mine with a 'normal' hex head one! Fairly large, maybe 18-19 MM?? Mine does have a copper washer.

Yep.. main reason for GDE's tune for me is to get the soot out! (but I'll take the added power and mpg's)!!
And yes, timing belt is on the end of my 'list'! (hopefully by Xmas I'll be done)

so.. If I buy the gde flash tool, send (email) keith my tune, and HE finds someone elses handiwork in there.... then what?? Can he strip it, and start over?

Of course. He is working with the fuel and boost maps for his magic, and a few other memory locations. There may be some other memory locations that he wouldn't normally mess with... But I'd be confident in saying that he has the stock settings saved and can overwrite any location he needs to.

Stripping of oil drain plug issue is:
1. pan is aluminum so can be stripped fairly easily. It's not really feasible to replace the pan IIRC doing so requires at least lifting the engine so...
2. OEM plugs come in allen head or hex head PLUS a copper, probably, washer. If someone drains the oil and reinstalls the plug without the washer the pan threads will likely get damaged (I forget the details of why).
3. if the pan threads get stripped or damaged they can be repaired/replaced per viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66245&p=728122&hilit=thread*+drain#p728122
4. Fumoto valve is handy as a) once installed it never needs removal so no chance of stripping aluminum threads and b) it makes draining easy. That said some don't like or worry about it hanging down enough to get damaged is certain off-roading situations. I worry more about the lever getting flipped accidentally so I use a plastic zip tie to lock it in place (you can use a small spring clamp but I found the clamp very hard to remove with the skid in place.

Most 'plug' type screws (such as the oil pan plug) don't have threads that go all the way to the head.. They do that so the crush washer has 'room' to expand while being,well, 'crushed'.. and IF you don't use a nice thick washer, the screw will go up into the pan even further, and have less threads to engage... making it easier to strip. aka 'pulling the threads through'.

I can see this being a problem, ^^^^^ and, NEVER removing sparkplugs from a aluminum head whilst hot... Most of us change oil when it's good an hot, there may be something here too.
Thanks for clarifying what gets stripped.. I would've sworn I read a post that someone rounded out the allen head.. hence the fumoto valve.
I've several stationary engines that use that valve, the only thing I don't like about them is the time it takes to drain 5-7 gallons of oil out!! Not really an issue with our crds..
Good idea with your safety device!.. I'd be a little leery of driving through brushy, tall grassy spots without a safety. I do have the skid plates however.
