If a fault is detected a code is set and when appropriate, don't ask me but I know some codes don't trigger a MIL/CEL, the MIL/CEL comes one. If the fault is a one time thing then after like 3-5 drive cycles the MIL/CEL will go off and IIRC the code clears.
