Post subject:  Glow Plug thread repair

Today I decided to swap my glow plugs and fix my CEL. Despite warming the head with the block heater and using Blaster I had a problem with GP #2. It came out a little hard and the threads on the glow plug appear flattened. The tip was fine but the head threads need some repair before I try to thread the new plug in. It seems that I should try to clean up the existing threads if possible. If this is not possible, it seems like a thread insert repair could be done. Luckily the #2 plug seems to have the best access. Has anyone actually attempted this type of repair on a CRD head with the engine in the car? Should I use a helicoil or one of the other products?

I've read the threads are M10 x 1.0. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Thanks

FYI:
Helicoil makes thread repair kits in that size: M10 x 1.0
Google it, plenty out there or check with NAPA...

You're correct on the thread. I am willing to bet that the head just needs a tap ran through it. Just use lots of grease on the tap to hold the thread filings from falling in. You may want to pull the injector and blow compressed air into the cylinder toblow any loose crap out of the glow plug hole. Just went through this process last weekend except I actually had to extract a broken glow plug.... It had a happy ending though! Jeep runs like a top and didn't drop a thing into the cylinder head by taking lots of precautions.
