When replacing the head gasket I had trouble with the turbo bolts but not before I had removed the drain pipe. I decided to not bother and pulled the exhaust manifold with the turbo attached. When I went to put back I was frustrated with the drain flange on the bottom of the turbo. Spent the better part of an afternoon trying to get that floating flange seated. I rgv d the bolts in sockets and used long extensions and thought I had it seated. Got the engine running, but that f---------- flange is pumping oil onto my shop floor.
Question---is there some trick to doing it from below or should I bite the bullet and pull the turbo attach the line and reinstall.

The drain-pipe should be press-installed in the block prior to installing the turbocharger - it's much easier to install when separated from the cartridge, but someone to manipulate the turbo while you install the pipe from underneath could be a solution

The flanged end requires a hi-temp gasket - altho there is no pressure inside the pipe, even silicone RTV cannot withstand the exhaust temperatures at the cartridge
